Hey guys I have a project that needs to be done. You guys are going to get me in trouble with the better half. I need to make or get my first semi custome rifle done.

Well to the point. I have a 7 mm rem mag in a weatherby Vanguard VGX. I love the gun itself but want to play with the caliber. this will be a deer gun and thats it. I have others for big game a 270 weatherby mag and a 338 win mag so other stuff is covered. I was just wanting interesting to do with it.

I am going to go with a pac-nor barrel of 26 inches. I was just going to send them the gun and do some things to it and hopefully get a shooter out of it. I just would like some opinions for users of the two that I mentioned. I was going to chamber this gun in 7mm stw but a e-mail reply said I can't chamber the stw in the vgx model. So I am going smaller and faster( I like faster HE HE) So what one to choose?
Oh I don't mind owning a gun that is close to the 270wby so redundance is not a big deal for me. thanks again <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

From what I have seen and read, I would go with the 257 Weatherby, I only have used the 25/06 Remington and really like the Quarter bores, and the weatherby is one of the best.

445,

I also live in NJ and sometimes it can be pretty hard to find .257 Wby ammo. You can usually find something, but not necessarily your favorite. But a few years back, I was unable to locate any .240 stuff. I ordered up 2 boxes from two suppliers, only to find that both had what I wanted on backorder.

If you handload you can always form .257 cases from a number of other belted cases, but the .240 case is it's very own, and unique, format. Go with the .257.

The .240 use an '06 sized bolt face. Your's is too big. Which is OK. I've owned a 240. The .257 has more of what you want. Heck, I'm doing some day dreaming about one myself. E

thanks guys for the input. I think I will go with the 257 weatherby mag. I wonder if I can just send my whole gun to pac-nor and have them do what I want. I really don't know how or what I should do to get the new barrel done and have them bed it in the stock and free float the barrel and maybe do some special accurizing features to it for maximum accuracy. Any input would be great and very helpful as this would be my first time sending a gun out to get anything done. thanks guys.

Just checked the CDC website and there seems to be a .257 WBY bug going around! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> Oh what a joyous bug to catch <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Pac-Nor states that they do "other" gunsmithing work besides rebarrelling so I would shoot them an e-mail if I were you!

I bet one of our board smith's would help you out too..

George:
I would hazard a guess he is talking about the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw.
But am not sure.

There are some 25 cal TBBC available, but they are 115gr. I couldn't get them to shoot worth a darn in my 257STW, and that rifle shoots everything well.
