If it shoots as good as it looks, you're in business. Very nice!

Are Rolexes obsolete or did they always suck? Its the many (but not all) Rolex owners that suck. Their pretentious attitudes were backward and obsolete from day one of them owning a Rolex. now go see a doctor about some lithium for your obvious mental problem, because this thread is about the .30/06 cartridge, not a military .30 cal. Rolex. As long as we're talking medication, you know those blue pills won't make you taller, right? I'm told they will make you taller laying down...never needed 'em myself. As far as the old 30/06 goes, it's not obsolete...it's merely redundant. Does't do anything that the 8x57is didn't do before it....

It's a sporterized military round, like the 308 and 223. They don't use just anything. It was well tested before they adopted it. It won 2 wars and would win a 3d if necessary. The only advantage the 5.56 has is that a soldier can carry a lot more of them.

It's a Remington 200 anniversary rifle. I bought it new, sold it to my son in law, traded another gun to him to get it back. He never shot it.

So......if something is 100years old it is obsolete? That's what you call logic?
WOW!! Bad news for the wheel. And the vice. And the lever. And the screw and driver. And the telephone. And the electric switch.
Or maybe being 100 years old and still extremely popular and common may mean that it's very much not obsolete, but is one of the standards by which other things are measured.
See if you can figure out which one it is.

The 30-06 is obsolete because there are so many cartridges that are better.............Which ones are better??????? The ones that kill just as well while recoiling less, having better flight ballistics, and/or fitting short actions. Too many to list, really. Better? Maybe as a deer cartridge. All ships rise with a rising tide. The .30-06 just moved up in weight class.

The flight ballistics of the bullet are irrelevant here because almost every bullet is used in multiple calibers. In fact, here's where the 30-06 excels because it can use bullet weights from 100 up to about 220 gr and use them well. I don't know if they're still made, but it would even shoot .22 cal. enclosed in sabots.

Cartridge design certainly has been improved upon since the 30'06. Personally I think it is overkill for deer, and recoil is too much for volume shooting. The 280 is what the '06 should have been from the start. I'd take a swede over either though...

I was sort of waiting for this thread to die out based on the shear idiocy of the original premise. However, seeing as though the word association thread is still alive and well, albeit in another place, I guess I will weigh in.
I have taken everything from groundhog and coyote up to 275 lb whitetails with the 30-06. I can't say for any one of them I was shooting the exact optimal combination of ballistics versus recoil. However, everything died in a spectacularly effective way. Over the past 40 years , I've lobbed a lot of stuff at a lot of stuff--223 Rem up to 35 Whelen. Along the way I have seen a lot of success and a few failures. What I have not seen is anything run away from a proper hit by a 30-06.
