A couple of years ago I became interested in "Antique" varieties of apples - ones that I remember from my youth. Varieties such as Crowegg, Red June, Early Harvest, Golden Russet, Betsy Deyton come to mind. These are hard to find now, having been supplanted by more "Modern" varieties, but will never really be replaced.
My current favorites are York Imperial and Cortland, varieties that are raised to a small extent here in WNC. Do any of you have other favorites that you could tell me about?

Most of the "modern" varities are made to allow for long term cold storage. I live in the wine and apple region of NY and most all of the old standbys are gone. I guess I can't blame the growers, but some of the old ones just tasted a lot better. Even if they went bad sooner and not great in storage.

Never even heard of those varieties! I kind of like the Granny Smith, out here they usually seem to be crisper than the average generic red apple(I can't remember the name!)

Steelhead was talking about apples awhile back and I actually found some at Central Market in Austin and bought some.... I had one and my kids ate the rest in one day...Don't remember the name of them though...I think that they were from New Hampshire...

I like them all!!!!
Tart ones my favoite, Winesaps. Granny Smiths, and another I don't find often, multi colored on outside, I think a Jonathan is the name, until they get soft, then they seem to loose the tartness.
Like the sweet apples also, if they are juicy and haven't been in cold storage long.
There is usually an apple in my "fixuns" when I head for the woods. That is number priority checklist item for trip to town: making sure there are enough in the fridge until next trip to town.
Heck, I even like fried green apples.

For me, there's nothing better than a Braeburn. Crisp, sweet and they have a great snap when you bite into 'em. Not many days go by that I don't have at least one.

My current favorites are the Red Delicious, Golden Delicious and the Fuji, Washington of course. When I was a kid, many years ago, my favorite was a locally grown apple which had a reddish skin and a white flesh,(?), that had red stripes through it, kind of like pre-ripened strawberries. Don't remember the exact name but I'm going to look, maybe Jonathan?
Don't think any of those old ones compare with the taste of the newer varieties, especially when you go pheasant hunting and pick 'em while you're there.

I have an Aunt who lives in MICH's U>P She has an orchard and grows some apples she calls Wolf Rivers and some she calls Transparents?? plus a coulple of other "old time" apples. This orchard was planted in the late 19teens. They have more flavor than anything you can buy at the grocer today.

Used to like Jonathons, when I was a kid. When we lived in Kansas City, each fall Dad would drive us up north into Missouri where all the big orchards were. We'd get several bushels and give some to our relatives.
Anymore, Granny Smiths seem to be about the best. I don't and never have liked a danged mealy Delicious.

I also like the Braeburns. I planted two trees this past Spring, but a whitetail buck literally tore one apart last November. I'll be planting a new one this Spring and also adding a couple of circular fences to prevent a reoccurance.
In an apple I like crisp flesh and a tart yet sweet taste.

Growing up in the Midwest I always remembered the Haroldson apples in the fall. When I moved west I sure miss them. I even have them shipped out here sometimes in the fall.
I wouldn't trade all the famous Washington apple varieties for a Haroldson. IMHO they are the best.
