My 67 year old eyes have a tough time with the original sights on my 99s. I am thinking of going to a tang style peep. Anyone have a recommendation for which tang sight to buy?

I prefer period correct for my 99's, all the peep sights seem to work equally well for me. So old Lyman 1A's for 1899's, Lyman 29 1/2 or 1A's for 1920's/early 30's, Redfield 70's for late 30's-50's, Lyman 56/57 for 50's..
Ball park dates above. A Lyman 29 1/2 or 30 1/2 on a 40's 99 is perfectly fine with me and probably perfectly correct.

Carl, Is this for the HP in your other thread? I agree with Rory and like to keep them period correct. I was amazed at how much better I could see my sights through a peep. My 1912 22 HP shoots very well through the tang sight, but it also has an offset Malcolm scope so I seldom use the tang, Joe,

Joe, yes it is for my new HP. A scope would be nice but I would like to try a peep first. So the Lyman 1A would be period correct for my HP? I wonder how difficult a 1A would be to find?

I wouldn't scope that rifle unless you got a Lightfoot no drill mount. The only reason mine has the scope is because the rifle was sold to the Malcolm Rifle Telescope Co. and I have a Historian letter to confirm it. Mike, one of our members, makes a scope mount that uses the dove tail for the rear sight and the two tang screws. If you do want to scope it send a message to "lightfoot", Joe.

Lyman 1A's show up on ebay fairly often. Just have to find one that the seller doesn't think is made of gold.

I'd be surprised if someone here didn't have one. If you can't find one here try Ken Bean "Sightman". He's in PA and does a lot of shows, he's down with a bad back right now. His number is (717) 755-9070, Joe.

Thanks Joe. Is the Lyman 1A adjustable for windage?

I favor the Lyman 30 1/2 for anything shy of late 30's vintage after which I'm partial to the Lyman 57. (Why oh why didn't Lyman ever adapt the Lyman 48 to the 99?) I seek out the windage adjustable tang sights, and have them on all my 1899H's for the simple reason of the non-driftable front sights on them. Shimming the base of a non-windage adjustable sight in an effort to effect a bit of windage and/or living with a less than perfectly dialed in gun is unacceptable to me. So what if the guns are a decade or so too early for the sight? To put it in perspective, if I have a "new" Remington 700 made in 2007 and I put a new Leupold on it introduced in 2017, would anybody know or care, now or a hundred years from now?
