Gentlemen
I have a 99C SeriesA, serial#C2074XX. It is a hunting rifle, originally a 308, now rebored to 358 Win. by JES. Buttstock is a Boyd's laminated
so no collector value.
The rifle shoots better than expected w/ it's HORRID trigger. Is there anything that can be done about this by the average Joe?
Or any recommendations of a gunsmith that will do such work w/o breaking the bank.

I believe that the redesign of the sear group for the tang safety 99s was done with the oversight of accountants. It is a conflagration of stamped sheet metal parts that perform just as you might expect from such a crude approach.
It is possible to rework the trigger-sear engagement to get a decent trigger pull. It is very hit and miss and often leaves the gun in a 'slam fire' condition.
I don't know any gunsmith to recommend. I also wouldn't expect any average Joe to be able to pull this off.

I have taken the butt stock off & noted the stamped parts. I don't know enough to have been able to figure out
what to do w/what I was looking at to effect the results i am seeking.

I've resurrected a couple of slam fire guns by working more on the trigger part of the engagement. But! it is very circumstantial. A good first step is to polish the engagement surfaces without removing any real amount of metal. It truly is in the vein of polishing a turd

Or get yourself a snap cap in 358 for the gun, and sit and dry fire the gun a couple hundred times.

Using a snap cap would sure improve ones skills in operating his rifle!!
I opted for the stone method and am certainly happy with the results...
I didn't bother scaling the trigger, it was never intended to be a bench gun.
Around 5 lbs., my guess, but it breaks like a "glass rod". Tried 15 times to get
it to slam fire on a fired case and it didn't.
As I stated I'm happy and can't wait to take it to the woods.

If you're in the 5 pound range there's not much chance of a slam fire. My compliments on your handiwork!
