I was going down the expressway yesterday and a truck slowly passed me and all I could think of was WOW! I'll bet he was a vet.

When I was in grade school, we recited the Pledge every morning outside as the flag was raised. If the weather was too bad, we did the same in the classroom (every classroom had a flag). Also said the Lord's Prayer being a parochial school. I don't know if any schools anywhere do that anymore.

They did where my kids went to school... Prayed at the beginning of all school functions. And it wasn't a parochial school, just a private school.

I grew up in the Boise, ID public schools. We always said the pledge every day, including the 'under God'. However, when the big school prayer blowup with Madeleine Murray O'Hare started, I'd never heard of it. We never prayed in school.

I am a public school teacher. We say the pledge every morning as well as recite the preamble to the constitution.

When reciting the pledge, which I do, I remain silent at the word "indivisible". I am not currently advocating dividing the nation, but I firmly believe in a government by the consent of the governed as declared in the Declaration of Independence. Government imposed on a people by the point of a bayonet is a despotic dictatorship, not a free representative republic. Words mean things.

They say the pledge here and Texas pledge. The have a minute is silent reflection. Who was the woman that raised such a stink about the Lord's Prayer? It seems like she turned up missing, then her body was found in a barrel.

Maybe her name was O'Hare. I don't remember?

Madalyn Murray O'Hair. She was the founder and long time president of the American Athiest Society. She was responsible for getting the SCOTUS to outlaw Bible reading in schools. She, her son, and her granddaughter were kidnapped and murdered. Someone was convicted of it and later led police to their bodies that were buried on a ranch somewhere. I don't know any details but a large number of gold coins and extortion were involved.

Couces, we need a lot more teachers such as yourself.

I was fortunate, that my son's High School in Rural Oregon was blessed with a number
of those kind of teachers also... and including the School Administration Staff.

Each November they have a ceremony honoring the Veterans of the local community.

Once you attend, they will call you up each year to see if you can make it again this year.

At the ceremony, they have the entire high school in attendance, and will give a roll call,
along with announcing your years of service, branch of service, any combat time etc.

We still have a few WW 2 vets attend.

They honor former students who have gone into the military.

First year the students were typical disinterested, can't be bothered attitudes, but were made to attend
anyway.

Following that, it has become highly popular with the kids, as the ceremony has been enhanced.
When it is over, the students requested the time to be able to come up and talk with the veterans, instead of being sent back to class as soon as it was over. There is a genuine serenity, when they come up and thank us for our service.

What really has impressed them as the ceremony starts out with the local Young Marine Unit who attend the High School
do the Flag Ceremony. The way the Veterans Snap to, and repeat the Pledge with such Patriotism has really made an impact
on the Students also. Especially when they see a couple of 90 yr old veterans in Walkers, still stand at attention with all
the strength it takes, just to stand that long.

Folks like Couces who are still doing what he is doing, its amazing how kids respond to it when they participate and see
it first hand, with real veterans especially. Its that very reason that the liberal left wanted to remove it from our school system.

And part of the ceremony, shows pictures of family members of students and the veterans who have served and are no longer with us.. due to being killed in combat or just finally passed due to age etc. Then the Lord's prayer is said. Its amazing how many
students respond to that, and understand that Freedom isn't Free.

My son graduated 5 years ago, but I still attend every year.

And it is obvious once again, those of us who have served, regardless of when or where, or how...

still have a brotherhood between us.... and the kids seeing it, also take notice, believe me... and just not the boys.

Once Again, Thank you Couces! Your and your schools impact, goes further than you probably realize.
