The other thread reminded me of an anecdote concerning my Old Man. Rather than risk hijacking the thread I'll relate it here.
One day back in the 80's I went to Pop's rescue to help him drag a freshly shot doe. He had drilled it with a .250 EG- the only deer I knew him to have killed with that gun.
He only had a piece of binder twine with him, scrounged from under the truck seat that morning. He lashed the twine around the butt behind the PG, and the other end around the fore end behind the schnabel, to make a half-assed sling to free his hands for the task of dragging the deer. He had cinched the rifle sling around the deer's neck figuring it would be stronger than the twine for that task.
I said "Pop, you carry the guns and I'll drag the deer with my handy-dandy deer drag harness." "Oh, ok."
He was a character and a real Savage nut, and would have turned 86 last week. He would've gotten a kick out of hanging with you guys (and would've probably spilled the beans about some of my shenanigans too).

My dad would have been 91 this upcoming June 21st. Thanks for making me think of him and thanks for sharing your father's 99 sling story.

My Grandfather would tie a piece of rope onto his Marlin 1894 .38-40. It was never drilled for a sling.
