My nephew brought up the rifle to have a scope put on. The rifle is new and was won in a raffle. I put the scope on and cleaned the rifle but it won't chamber a round. I tried factory and hand loads. Looks like it lacks about 1/4 " and when removing there are brass shavings in the chamber. How's savage customer service cause this sure isn't right.

You may have an issue with the scope front base screws protruding into the action or the front action screw in too far. Try checking those two possibles before calling the factory. In the past I have had frequent issues with one or the other problems. Back off the screws and try to cycle the bolt. Oh yeah, did the bolt close before installing the scope bases?

The bolt cycles fine until ta put a round in it. I will pull the scope and mounts and see if that'll do it. Thanks

Just removed the scope and base and still won't chamber. Removed the stock also.

Do you have a local gun smith close by, if so have him run a go no good gage on the chamber. Good Luck. NC

The extractor may be keeping the cartridge from chambering. The extractor is supposed to be centered on a tiny ball bearing that is under spring pressure. It is supposed to slide outward enough for the cartridge case to slide past and then snap into the groove. Look at Youtube and search for removing the extractor. I use a sandwich bag to keep the ball bearing from flying into space. You might be able to remove the extractor and insert the other end of it and get it working.

I did remove the extractor and it'll chamber perfect. Should have read your post earlier instead of looking for the little ball bearing. Only 1 end of this extractor has a slope the other is square. Almost looks like the slope on the extractor wasn't enough and the round binds. I used a piece of new brass and ya really need to come into it to chamber and it draws out and extracts like it should. Sounds like just a flaw in the extractor which can be fixed.

Glad to hear it was a minor fix. Call Savage and they will probably send a new extractor free. I just called them today to get a part for a friend's Model 93 and they are sending it free as a warranty issue.

Ended up smoothing down the extractor with a dremil but I also noticed a grove in 1 of the lugs so i took some fine paper to it. Works perfect now, while sighting in at 100 yds 6 shots 4 of which were in 1 hole after scope adjustments.

My granddaughter has one in 243. Amazingly accurate, she doesn't miss with that rifle.
