Yes TX is mostly high fences and trophy fees Yes, there are too many high fences and they increase all the time, but they don't out number low fences. But when it comes to outfitters (not leases) I certainly agree that trophy fees will be involved more often than not.

And I respectfully disagree with PDS and BCR. Please, prove me wrong. Where in Texas can I find a whitetail deer hunt under three thousand dollars with no high fences and I will see a buck that goes 140 or better? Inquiring minds want to know......... With a < $3,000 price tag on an all inclusive hunt I can't prove you wrong off the top of my head. For more than that I could. Price limit wasn't mentioned in the original post that I recall. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

And where can we find a place that will let us just wander around un-escorted, should we want, fair chaseing white tails?
BCR Only thing I can think of for this is a day lease, but you'd be lucky to see anything good.

I too would recommend the western hill country/edwards plateau/west Texas and on up through the panhandle. If I come up with anything specific I'll post it up.
Good Luck.

I would recommend Northwest Texas and the Panhandle for what you've described you want. Shackleford county has terrific hunting with almost no high fences. Big ranches, and big deer. Here's a link with a dozen or so ranches you could call: Albany Hunting You could also call the Albany Chamber of Commerce for a longer list.

163bc, While going through your searches you can save a lot of time by eliminating ranches with exotics, they have high fences.
You might try Val Verde county (Del Rio is the county seat) they have good deer numbers in this area and not as over priced as south texas brush country.

Yes and no. In the Hill Country there are free ranging Axis, Sika, fallow, etc. But that is a good basic rule of thumb.

There are some really good free range outfitters left; especially in the panhandle. DT

Droptine, we kill at least a couple of 140's on my lease every year too. It is possible.
It is irrelevant what you think. What matters is the TRUTH.

Yes it can be done on the right season lease. I've posted this photo from my lease last season a time or two. While I may not take one this nice every season, they are there if I want to work hard enough to find them. I can hunt for them any way I want, any time during the season I want, my sons can hunt with me, and it only cost me a grand for the year. What would this buck cost on a guided hunt?

You may want to consider other states. This place here is a great deal better than any Texas hunt. Worth a look. They have hunts in 5 different states with no trophy fees and Large bucks. http://www.imbmonsterbucks.com/deer.htm
