A friend of mine is looking at this cal. for Elk hunting. Debating a build or going with the existing rifle from Nosler, M-48 I believe. JB wrote an article about it, but wondered if there are any changes in peoples minds, about gun/cal., after some time has now passed. Ammo for it is expensive. Wonder too if he should just stick with a 7 Rem Mag?
Thoughts/experiences?
Thanks

PM firstcoueswas80. He has done a lot of shooting and reloading with that cartridge, and I believe that he has used it on elk.

With rifle loonies there's always a conflict between being "practical" and getting what they really want, whether they tend more toward older "classics" or newer cutting-edge.

But I dunno why a 28 Nosler wouldn't be as practical as a 7mm RM, once you get past the initial cost of, say, 100 pieces of brass. My experience with the Nosler rifles is they shoot very well, and are one of the fine ready-to-shoot options on the market, but that also may not satisfy his yearnings. Many shooters prefer going through the trouble and time of a custom build, because that's what pleases their inner loony.

I always said that if I was going to go out west after Elk or something I would spring the $3900++ for the Kelby's Atlas rifle. I believe they would make that in anything you want. But if I lived there it would be a simple off the shelf rifle.

Those are good rifles. I base this on what I have read, You could tell your friend, to go hunting just like a native of a given state. They will go hunting with just your run of the mill caliber and rifle. 243, 308, 25-06, 270, 30-06. some magnums but, mostly the lesser rounds,
Take care.

I have a Nosler M48 rifle in 300 WSM.
Quality wise and as reference, it's just as good as my Sako 85.
It's also the most accurate rifle I own. I would buy another in a heartbeat.

Thanks All for the feed back. Boy, when you add it all up, I think the M48 would be the way to go, BUT, John may have nailed it.
This topic came out of nowhere this past wkend, and he knowing us, know`s we`ve, my son and I, have done the build thing a time or two. We get a donor 700, tear it apart, and put it back together again. Doing the work ourselves we`re looking at 1k plus for parts.

Thanks again, appriciate it.
