Has anyone ever worked on a Bear Guard project?

Where is the best place to look for job ads for Bear Guard Jobs ?

Which companies regularly hire for this ?

How long is a typical field deployment?

What is the tipical pay range per day for this ?

Would strong Medical skills, background, current certs be helpful ?

Thanks. Any info is appreciated.

Like a cross between a Guide or Security Guard who goes out in the field typically with an Oil and Gas crew or a Survey crew and prevents them from having issues with the bears, by using good judgement, sound, less lethal or if all else fails lethal means to keep them safe.

Is that kinda like the "cattle guards" that Slick Willie wanted to eliminate from the Forest service's budget? smile

A couple of my guides, including my daughter, have done it and while it pays OK, it is intermittent as the gov't jobs that require them always seem to take an inordinate amount of time to get started and you are simply spending time waiting to start.

A friend of mine runs a Bear Guard company based out of Ninilchick, AK. As Phil stated, the nature of the work is indeed sporadic, but I do know that a medical background would be helpful. I don't know if they are currently hiring. I will PM you with the information.

My Adopted step-son is working on the Slope. His duties includes Bear guarding and Bird Hazer.
Here is the web site for Fairweather; http://fairweather.com/
I know that Red Bear was doing it, but I don't see it mentioned.

Application sent out to Fairweather, thanks for the heads up.

I do appreciate all the responses.

Does anyone happen to have or be able to get a packing list that en employer might provide for their guys before they head afield ?

I am patient if I am too late for work this year there is always next year.

Anyone happen to what the range in pay per day usually is ?

No. For them, it was not enough money for the trouble they felt it was.

ETA: Just remembered a third guy that was hired and then let go right away because he insisted in carrying a sidearm. The company only wanted long guns.

From what I gather they prefer to hire guides, for whatever that is worth, but those I know who have done it are not waiting in line to do it again!

Depends on who is hiring you but around $300/400day is in the ball park. But if you count the days, and weeks !, standing by waiting for the contract to be finialized and your paying portion to begin it won't make you rich.

A degree in wildlife biology and or much practical experience in a state game department does not hurt either. The "cherry" jobs are always on the North Slope and tend to come up very seldom. When they do, odds are only someone "known" gets them. These are usually a multiple week on, week off affair and may pay from $65 to $75 K per year. There are very few of these out there...

I figured bender as a gentleman of taste and sophistication and being bud light would be sufficient to keep him at bay wink
