Well I've only taken one coyote and it was with a 223, but I've had good luck with the 22 mag on turkeys IF......you use fed. 50 gr hp's. Hit them anywhere that you would kill them with a 223 and they'll die. Till about 8 years ago I too said the 22 mag wasn't any good for turks till I watched a guy using federals, man did they do a number on them. I would use it for yotes to about 100 yds. the heavier bullet gets good penetration on that size game. RR

Use the 64 gr Win. PP or 60 gr Horn for turkey and you should not ruin the meat too much and you will put them down with authority. The 223 has the advantage in accuracy, range, power, rifle selection, re-sale value............. and can be basically just as cheap to shoot.

bucfevr,
I hunt turkeys with a Savage Model 24v combination gun in .222 over 20 gauge. If money is an issue, and it is for most of us, these Savage combination guns are pretty common, both new and used, and can be had for a lot less than any Remington Model 7 that I can think of.
My turkey gun is also my truck gun, so when I want to hunt with it, I just spray a little camo paint on the worn spots, blow the dust out of the barrel and off the scope lenses and go sit in the woods.
Sincerely,
Bearrr264

Bearrr264, just curious if you ever worked the trigger on your Savage? My Dad has a 24V in 223 over 20 gauge. I have shot it occasionally at targets, not hunting, and the trigger seems pretty stiff. I don't know if they are all like this or just his. Seems like a good gun other than that. I might have to "borrow" it awhile and try it out hunting. Let me know if you have any trigger tips for it. Thanks!

bukfevr,
The Model 24 is a simple action that is easy to work on. I had a fellow who does wonders with S&W revolvers stone my trigger/hammer to create a crisp and consistant trigger pull. The factory trigger pull is more of a pull, pull, pull, pull, there she goes!
A Model 24v .223/20 would be even better than my .222/20 and, when I get around to borrowing Carbonman's .223AI reamer, mine won't be a .222 any longer either!
Sincerely,
Bearrr264
