On second thought, I don't think an Akita would be good for you. They don't take it well when their Master gets sent away to jail. Yeah...it looks like huntsman better worry about what kind of guard dogs are outside the wire...

There is a reason why 85% of Police and Military working dogs are Shepherds.

American Akita. We have one, it's our third Akita and the breed makes a great pet and a natural guard dog. They are known as the most loyal breed. They only bark when there is a really good reason, ours almost never barks. The Akita was originally bred to hunt big game, but the Japanese realized they are much better suited to home duties like watching the children. The breed is not for everyone and should be researched before owning. Son had a pair of them, the bitch would kill and bury every strange dog or cat that entered their yard. Just his experience with Akita's. Cheers NC

Buy a Smithfield or a Heeler, unless you just want to impress people.
These are my opinions, feel free to disagree.

I hope you have a good reason to want a guard dog. You can read in the news almost every week about a dog getting at some kid and either chewing them up badly or in a rare case killing them. You better have yourself prepared for a lot of careful training if you don't want to lose everything you have for allowing your dog to harm some one. I personally would not own a dog that bit. Too risky. A barker would be a better choice. You could get yourself a neat small dog that would either warn you or ward off some intruder. Try a Border Collie and buy a couple of pistols to have around the house. Good advice ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Everyone's needs are different but I won't have a dog that bites. I just want em to wake me up so I can address the problem if there indeed is one. My Mountain Cur doesn't miss a thing and acts like she'll take your arm off but shes harmless. I do however think she'd bite someone in self defense.

I had to look up the Smithfield breed. Pretty cool dogs......I'd have one. http://www.wolfweb.com.au/acd/smithfield.htm

Dang it all FG,
now you've got me surfing the web about Smithfields! I can't resist good dog "stories".

PS, mutts make great watchdogs too.

PS, mutts make great watchdogs too. Yep......a watchdog's all I need. Course it doesn't hurt if they'll hunt a little too. Most dogs will do both to a degree given the chance.......even mutts.

Do you want it for actual guard dog duty or just for the alarm/deterrence?
