My folks are up for a visit so I loaded up the family and headed up to Tangle Lakes to get away from the salmon crowds. Weather was good, sunny days and temps around the freezing point at night. Caught lots of grayling and small lakers. Beautiful part of the state and I always enjoy spending time up there.

Thanks for sharing that. It brings back lots of great memories growing up there.

Very cool! Just got to introduce a young man to fly fishing very close to there. He got to loving spey casting with a switch rod in a hurry.

Both my boys liked fishing with the fly rod. They did switch back and forth with the spinning gear quite a bit, but as you know as long as they are out there having fun with you that's all that matters. I went out late and swung flies with the switch rod and dredged up some small lakers in the narrows on the south side of the highway. When the weather is good it's a great place to be.

Nice pictures. From my perspective that looks like a perfect day with the right people. 👍

Riley spent more than a little time there learning on grayling... it is a great confidence builder.

been there a few times, never fished, just hooking it towards ANC and the plane.... really enjoy that road though... but it needs time to be enjoyed correctly! Buzzing through is nice but sucks.

Looks like a great time was had by all!

The wife and I left the kids with my folks for a bit and peeled off to the Maclaren. My wife had never been up there and she thoroughly enjoyed the views. We stayed at Tangle Lake campground from Tuesday to Friday but would have liked another week or so. I never get tired of it, well except when the wind is blowing 60 with snow and rain!

Grayling makes fly fishing fun for a beginner for sure. I just tied on some elk hair caddis so they could see the fly drifting and let them have at it. I did put on a size 18 bead head brassie with an indicator for them too and they loved watching the indicator dive under.

You were about the midpoint 141 miles from Paxson to Cantwell. Tangle is 26 or so from Paxson and you likely went the Parks route and missed it.

I think the campground was just over the 21 mile mark out of Paxson on the trip meter. The road is great from that end. It's paved all the way in to Tangle.

Brings back memories of camping there with my little brother during his first trip to AK. We lived on hot dogs, coors light and a little bit of fish. Had a grand time, beautiful views.
