I've just sold a rifle and now have a sizeable sum reserved for a Low Wall in 22 hornet. Now the trick is finding one. A Winchester/Browning would do rather nicely. IOf anyone spots one for decent coin, drop me a line ($1200 limit right now)

There are usually a couple on the auction sites, but I don't see any right now. If you have a little patience, I'm sure one will show up.

Sweet little guns. Wish I could find one in .260 for a reasonable price.

GunsAmerica has 2 Hornet 1885s last week. One was overpriced, the other was in the $900s.

I would probably give 7-750 for one...would be more, but I would have to factor in a rebarrel.

I like awake at night thinking how awesome it would be to find a 260, then have a pro set the barrel back a couple of threads and run a 6.5x55 reamer into it...ahh it would be heaven!

So far I've found one at cabelas. Seems a little pricey.

Biathalonman:

Keep one thing in mind with setting back a 260 and reaming to a 6.5x55 ... it will still be twisted a little slow for the longer bullets. I could "AMEN" a rebarrel with a same dimensioned octagonal 3 groove 1 in 8 twist with a short throat in a 6.5x55 or even a 6.5-06 (regular or AI).

In fact *I* lay awake at night with that vision in my head ...

I believe there is a 6.5 rem in a shop in Bloomington, MN, just south of MSP. "Muzzleloaders Ect." Jim Westberg is owner/operator. Might be the highwall variant

Ya- I got a lowwall in .260rem and I'm keeping it. Got that shiney finish stripped off and a real nice oil finish on it.

There's a 260 for sale right now. At about $100 last time I checked?

Well, I haven't completely decided on caliber. I just bought a 22 WMR so I don;t know if I need a hornet. But I definitely want a low wall Browning.

What other calibers were available?

I saw that one. Looks nice. But $1000 is a little hard to cough up.

$1200 now. That sucks. How a poor but honest guy to get a decent low wall?

If I remember correctly, the standard Browning Low Wall came in .22 hornet, .223, .243 and .260. Then there was a traditional hunter series in .357 Mag, .44 Mag, and .45 Colt. The hornet was the most common by far.

I think when they dropped them, there was some speculation about lawyers and the lack of a safety, but it was probably just lack of sales. They had what they called an inertial sear that really made the half cock safety pretty safe. It is near impossible to lower the hammer all the way to the firing pin.

Maybe we should start a letter writing campaign to get Browning to bring them back! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

$1625 Wow! That has to be some kind of a record! I guess it is true what they say about auctions. That seller has got to be happy!

Crazy, but maybe not so crazy.

Low walls in great condition seem to be in short supply, particularly 243 and 260. I'm debating getting a NIB hornet, or a used on that's cheaper but fairly beat. So far I've found a few NIB in the 1400-1600 range. I should have got the itch several years sooner. frown
