Why just Monday I BRUISED my right shoulder shooting my 8 mm REM MAG & 300 WIN MAG ! ! How's that for manly?  Jerry Not manly at all, since it bruised you.  . Well 'it' wasn't it. It was 'THEM'. You can't ZERO a new mounted scope w/one shot. So BOTH mags were shot a few Xs.   Guys - I try always to be honest. I didn't count the # of shots per rifle PLUS when sighting in or grouping , I don't hold the fore end. I let it lay AND recoil. And that's the truth !! (Lilly Tomlin, if you're old enuff to remember ) ! All in good fun. Jerry

Brad, Thanks for sharing. I'd seen it before; it's a classic articls on the 7mm-08. Seeing Finn's 7mm-08 Ruger 77, Dennis Hall's work with his Ruger 77 in 7x57 came to mind. REportedly those old 7x57's were loose chambered with long throats. 7mm-08's seem to have more consistent and standard chamberings. Don't try this at home, as they say on TV...  Dennis was way off the SAAMI reservation, IMO. That's a good read Brad. Thanks for posting. Once I had admitted to myself that I had fallen in love with this caliber, I figured I'd get a rifle I wouldn't get tired of having, and one that wasn't so nice as I'd be afraid to drag it around in the sandhills, hence a 24" barreled McWhorter built on a 700 action (according to my handloads a pretty tight chamber) made it's way to my house. Yes that's a VX3 CDS, but I had them put a B&C reticle in it, so now I have a scope that wears a belt and suspenders. It is a match made in heaven though actually. I have a supremely accurate load of 42.5g Varget and a 140 Accubond heading out of the muzzle at 2820fps, sight in dead on at a most unusual 215yds. Why 215? Using the B&C reticle, the first has is dead on at 300, next hash dead on at 400, next small has at 450, top of thick/thin vertical reticle dead on at 500. It has been verified many times as being dead nuts on at those ranges without having to touch a turret, and the hashes in the reticle are very easy to see. All this at max power, which it will obviously be on if I have to shoot 400-500 yds. Agree with Jerry on that stock, super cool pattern. And, you always told me you were a "simple man"... That's an interesting approach, reticle and turret. It is sort of a belt and suspender approach. I'll probably twist at yardages in the 350-650yd, in between the hash mark ranges. Even then the stars will have to align before I take a 500+ yard shot at a big game animal....wind, super solid rest (can't get prone very often on my mule deer place), etc. Steel at the range is so easy a caveman can do it though........

You've got some real beauties there Mr DF! Looks like you've grown fond of those Conquests with a turret. My buddy who I hunt whitetails with has one on his 4.5-14 Conquest and it does a real good job. He dials about as often as I do on game, but we have lots of fun on targets, hogs, and yotes. Great stuff!

Thanks, Johnny. I traded the CZ, wasn't using it. Found it a great home where it is cherished. The pictured Conquest in on either my 7mm-08 or 6.5 CM. I have two identical 3-9x40 Conquests with turrets, can't tell them apart. That turret tape company you put me onto will soon be getting some orders. In trade, I got a great .22 Hornet CZ Prestige with beautiful stock, now a K-Hornet. I had a lot of fun messing with it, got into some deep Loony gack, even JB was knee deep in Loony minutiae. there is no doubt the 7-08 and 7x57 are very capable rounds - anyone claiming otherwise is either ignorant or lying.
for years i wanted a 7-08 to go with my 7RM. What I got, for a variety of reason - including a price I couldn't pass up, was a .280 Rem. I load it as follows:
3051fps = 120g TTSX
2901fps = 140g AccuBond
2928fps = 140g TTSX
2942fps = 140g North Fork SS/HP (a design that never went into full production but that I have a pile of)
These are not exactly screaming velocities, but I have my 7RM for those. These were chosen for accuracy. A 7-08 can pretty much duplicate these velocities but requires higher pressures to do so. These loads are easy on the brass and my shoulder. Don't see a 7-08 or 7x57 in my future but if I didn't have the 280 I'd be looking.

When my daughters drew moose tags they were 13 and 15 years old, the 7mm-08 was what I settled on for them to use. It's probably on the low end as far as moose rifles go but it was what I thought they could handle comfortably. Neither of them had any trouble killing their moose with 140 grain Accubonds. One killed a 576 pound cow at 30 paces and the other a 742 pound bull at nearer to 300.

The 7mm-08 works well in a SA, whereas the 7x57, IMO, needs a LA, at least a medium length, 3" action.
The 7mm-08 has more predictable chamber specs than the 7x57.
7mm-08 is in modern rifles, the 7x57 over the century, has been chambered in a bunch of different rifles of varying strengths.
The 7x57 in a modern action, can be hot rodded to outperform the 7mm-08 (See Dennis Hall link... :o).
They're both nice rounds that perform beyond expectation.
Those that actually use them know.

JG, the 140 Accubonds you are using, are they the 140 extended range ? I have not been able to find anything else in the 7mm 140 accubonds. Maybe old age is the problem. Thanks Daniel
