What's wrong with good ole mineral spirits I.E. paint thinner for cleaning gummed up surfaces, carbon, or dirt off a gun? Guns aren't made up of some sort of mystery formulation of metals exclusive to guns. You're cleaning steel, it's that simple. The gun industry has a hay day milking dollars out of customers by marketing the latest greatest space age technology formula made specifically "for guns" that sometimes is far inferior to plain old gun cleaning solvent, or the same thing for 3 times the money. Which lube do you use on your autos? Dave I'll ask you a couple of questions that if you really think about it you can answer the oiling or lube question for yourself. How many 30 round magazines per minute do you run through your autos? And if it's even possible that you go out and run multiple 30 round magazines through your autos per minute, which would you worry about first, ruining your barrel, or your receiver? Approximately how many rounds do you fire before you feel your barrel should be cleaned to maintain accuracy? Whatever that number is wipe the action down briefly with a cleaning solvent at the same time and you are good to go.

You seem pretty savvy on all things firearms so I'll answer your questions in hopes of receiving an answer to my question. 1.) Bunches 2.) Niether 3.) I never feel my barrel should be cleaned (not a dick reference) 4.) Wipe down the action? Dave

Steam. THE most overlooked and underutilized gun cleaner out there. Flushes out oil, grease, powder fouling, and even petrified Cosmoline in nothing flat. Heats the metal to both evaporate any condensed water and ready the metal for any preventative oil you care to apply afterwards. An E6 taught me how to clean my M-16 in nothing flat by holding it under the shower nozzle with the water on full blast and as hot as it would go. Rinse out the upper and lower, shake out whatever loose water would come out and the rest would evaporate in a few moments from the hot metal. Lube and continue to march. Everybody else would spend an hour with q-tips and pipe cleaners trying to clean every nook and cranny with so-so results. Five minutes in the shower and my weapon always got rated "outstanding!".
Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery. Hit the target, all else is twaddle!

I only know this much: 1) Never mix petroleum and synthetic lubricants 2) Fancy gun lubes are BS, just use Mobile 1 10w30 or 20w50

Some time ago I made the huge mistake of "conditioning" an AR and AK with FIREClean, an allegedly repackaged canola oil. Canola oil , ain't that some kinda cooking oil the snowflakes use ? Why would anybody use cooking oil on a firearm ? Mike

You guys be careful spraying brake clean on a hot gun or any other hot part, welding, grinding, etc, etc. the fumes from that chit can kill ya. Yeah, it doesn't feel good when you get it in your eye either...
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Well, Mike, nobody knew it was canola oil until after it was on the market for some time. And, deflave said it was great stuff. Lot's of info on the web about the controversy if you're actually curious. Rick

Dave No I'm not particularly savvy on firearms, there's a lot of people know more than I do about particular things related to guns than I do. It's just the older I get I try to rely on common sense and experience instead of chasing the bright shiny objects. That's not directed at you but me. The answer to your question is none. I use a very light oil to wipe down guns and parts to protect them when they are put away.

My wife came back recently from a weekend with her girlfriends who are all in their late 50's and early 60's. Appears there is a very good use for coconut oil as a natural lubricant. No report to follow

Some time ago I made the huge mistake of "conditioning" an AR and AK with FIREClean, an allegedly repackaged canola oil. Initial results were good but those rifles are now a gummy sticky mess. Anybody know the best way to completely clean this stuff off of gun parts? I just cleaned 5 handguns and used this stuff on them. Sure wish I would have seen this thread before I did that.

Actually, Barry, they came out with that 40 or so years ago. 5 or so years ago they discovered it reduces/retards plaque formation in the brain responsible for Alzheimers and now they sell it in capsule form for that reason. It seems to be effective along with ginger and Turmeric.
