For those of you that live in the upper reaches, there is supposed to be a good Northern Light's show tonight. That is unless a cloud cover ruins it for you. The family is itching for this. Haven't seen any this year so far and I'm fairly close to the Canadian Border. If you have a clear sky tonight, give it a look.

Might be a bit tough to see since I'm still in the period of 24/7 sunlight.

Almost certainly due to that one large sunspot that looked right at Earth this past week.

Curiously, UAF's auroral forecast is pretty low.

That's interesting as there was a Mass Coronal ejection timed to hit the Earth starting around 06:00 this morning (CST) and lasting through tomorrow morning with a peak between 21:00 and 03:00 CST.

Here's a link to track geomagnetic storms, all times are UT (Old Greenwich Mean Time) ;

I'll be in northern Manitoba next week. I'm hopeful that they'll be visible. The sun sets for about 6 hours, so hopefully I'll get to see them. It's been a long time.

Looks like the storm peaked in US daylight, but aurora is hard to reliably predict. Here's a good link to (yet another) a NOAA site that I like best: Space Weather Enthusiasts Dashboard

For aurora prediction scroll down to "Aurora Forecast." Run the video, it's kinda funky so be patient. It will run.

We're approaching the bottom of the sunspot cycle (scroll way down on the linked page) so aurora visible in the US will be rare for 4 - 6 years.

I'm at 55* N and some change. Even with the line extending that low, it's rare to see them out here in the blowhole.

I watched a pretty cool display this spring while driving to work. Eventually the twilight got bright enough to obscure the lights, but a pretty good display for nearly 1/2 hour.

Had a sister in law that took a job as a speech therapist up there in Flin Flon...

We went up for a visit... while up there she and my wife decided to go to the movies
which I think the only place was the drive in... but that is where we went.

The movie started at 1 AM, because it wasn't dark enough until that late at night.

When we lived in England as a kid, it got dark about that same time at night during the summer...

Those of us at places further south don't get to experience and enjoy day light like that...

of course we don't have to endure lack of day light come winter either...

but I love summers in northern places for all the daylight you get to experience.
