I'd prefer a real elk bullet for a first timer, but stick it in the ribs and I doubt you'll have any trouble.
I probably hit more elk with a pickup than you have with a rifle. I have yet to see anyone claim Leupold has never had to fix an optic. I know I have sent a few back. 2 MK 6s, a VX-6, and 3 VX-111s.

I'm hunting in West Texas. I will not shoot past 400 but that is a possibility. What is a real elk bullet for a 7mag.

I just got a box of 160 gr. Federal Premium Trophy Bonded Tip bullets from MidwayUSA. Will try them over RL-26 in my 8 twist Brux 7RM. www.midwayusa.com/product/369466/fe...grain-polymer-tipped-boat-tail-box-of-50Anyone worked up loads with these? They, reportedly, are very good hunting bullets. DF

What is a real elk bullet for a 7mag. Partition, Accubond, or A-Frame in the 160-175gr weight range.

Elk in west Texas tend to run a little smaller in body than those in the Rocky Mountains or in transplanted populations back east. Nonetheless, I would opt for at least a 160 AccuBond, TTSX or Partition.
However, trainloads of elk are killed each year by hunters with 7mm Mags and whatever ammo was on the shelf at the local outdoor emporium, so go with whatever shoots best in your rifle. Just be sure and sight in carefully and shoot some from field positions to ensure that you can put the bullet where you need to.

I'd skip the ELDX and try a 160 Accubond or Partition out of your 7Mag.

I'm planning to try them in my Mashburn pretty quick. I plan on putting one in the jugs but I need to figure out how to post the darned things!

I'm planning to try them in my Mashburn pretty quick. I plan on putting one in the jugs but I need to figure out how to post the darned things! Open an Imgur account, easy to do. Upload pictures from your computer to Imgur. I like to have my Picures file and Imgur both at half page, drag photos from Pictues to Imgur, they'll upload pretty quick. Then on Imgur, click "images", then double click the picture you want to post. There will be a list of options on the right. Click on "BB Code (message board and forum). Paste that link on your post. The picture will light up. Pretty easy. DF

I happily used a 175 grain Nosler Partition from my 7mm Rem Mag on a good 6x6 bull elk up in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming. It worked really well, dropping the bull after only a few steps.
Last December I shot a cow elk though the shoulder with a 165 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip, through the shoulder, from my 30-06 rifle. Another one-shot kill.
I've no experience with the bullet you're interested in.
Shot placement is most important!
Best of luck on your hunt! Guy

Thanks for all the responses. If I'm successful I will post a picture. On a side note, years ago I was on a deer hunt on the Deseret Land and Livestock. At dinner I sat next to one of their elk guides. I asked him his favorite elk cartridge. His answer "nothing kills 'em deader than a 30-06"

That is a good looking bullet design, let us know how they shoot. I haven't seen B.C. values or terminal performance data, i.e. how well they open at different speeds. They do look good and the design is interesting. Sorta looks like a cross between a TTSX and a C&C. If the front part is soft lead, you'd think they'd open like a Partition, the solid core boring on thru. DF

For those of you who are against using the 162gr. ELD-X I'd like to know why. Maybe some real experience stories, test results, etc. They look to be every bit as stout as the IL, and / or Rem CL. Placement is way more important than nearly everything else.
