Good thing neither of them had a handgun,,, someone might have been hurt.

I'm mean-spirited enough to hope that this couple were liberals. The problem is that there is a large number of people out there who believe that it is perfectly all right for mountain lions to harvest the occassional human or two. Of course they don't want it to happen to them or one of their friends. Since humans, in their world view, are simply another animal on this planet, with no special status, this is perfectly okey to them.

Even a .38 at that range would have been a good thing, cats are thin skinned like 2 legged predators.

They're definitely from the bottom of the gene pool.
Anyone who would go out flirting with disaster has got to have some kind of stupid tattooed to their brains.
Maybe that's the way to get rid of liberals; send them out jogging and invite cougars for their dinner.

She poked its eye and hit it with a stick. She should be charged with assault, cruelty to animals and interfearing with an animals right to feed.
The wildlife officials should be sued for denying the animals rights becaue they didn't first determine the guilty animal. Then two counts of murder. How dare they!!

I wonder what constitutes "experienced hikers". No gun, no knife, no pepper spray, not even a sharp stick......

Lions survive on alternate food choices: cats, dogs, livestock,etc.
Nature will not balance lion numbers due to large supply of
alternate food choices.

Ability to manage lions taken away from state fish & game via
proposition 97.

California has twice the amount of lions compared to neighboring western states.


A lot of the transient crazies that have voted for this kind of B.S. are now
fleeing our home state and spreading their hideous agenda's to other states.

Regarding the attack, a Glock, or small .357 would have motivated the cat to dine elsewhere.

Woman, age 65, saves husband...

Jim and Nell Hamm, who will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary next month, were hiking Wednesday in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, 60 miles south of the Oregon state line, when the lion pounced.

she's 65, 50th coming up, married pretty young! still, he got a good one, she fought hard and used her head afterwards.

That happened here.I've been to that park many times.

If that cat attacked me,he woulda died right there.I'm always totin',when hiking around here.There's cats everywhere.

Just goes to show, liberals get what they wish for. They wanted free ranging predators, they got them, next they need to reintroduce grizz thay used to be so plentiful in California the Spanish would lasso them for sport. But that may be cruelty since they did it from horsback and I am sure a lot of horses got clawed

Remember to take a good pen with you in the woods. When they said the pen is mightier than the sword they weren't talking about those cheap Bic stick pens made of plastic.

I lived there and was hunting mountain lions in the Sierra in 1969. Perfectly legal then, but.... 1972, no more.

Then Prop. 97, as you said, outlawed mountain lions hunting in Kalif., forever.


As for you people criticizing the couple as being "bleeding heart liberals," and not carrying a .458 Win. Mag. in a Kalif. State Park, where all firearms are outlawed, how about cutting them some slack, for Christ's sake!!

Bleeding heart liberal or not (???), the woman stood tall and FOUGHT BACK!! Even though she had nothing but a freakin' ballpoint pen, when it broke, she did not panic and run, she grabbed a stick and continued to fight back!!

She saved her husband's life with what was on hand. Then she got him out of there and to help!

How many here who are criticizing her and her husband, have a wife or girl friend, who, IN THE SAME SITUATION, with NO REAL WEAPONS, would stand tall and FIGHT BACK???!!! Some would; some wouldn't. You never know until it happens to you and your spouse.

Hindsight for those who were not there, is always 20/20 vision, isn't it??

No matter their politics, no matter they had no real weapons, they survived.

I applaud the woman for what she did. No panic and no running away and leaving her husband to die.

MontantMarine, I went on a camping trip with my dad up to Seven Brother's Lake near Buffalo Wy back in 1984.
We checked in at the ranger station and my dad asked how he could get a great job like this, hiking about in the woods. A smug young lady told him (dad spent 21 years in the 'Corps) she was uniquely qualified because she had so much 'backpacking experience'. Dad just looked at her and laughed. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I think my simple "assisted opening" knife would have quickly killed that cat.
Brave and tough lady. He's lucky.
