Scrapped the old cattle pens. Put in used highway guard rails and new railroad ties. A neighbor flew a drone over the farm a couple of days ago and took a pic of my handiwork. Good thing he told me in advance or I would have shot it out of the sky. The tax assessor will be along soon to assess the improvements.

Nice!
Spent a lot of time in the cooler months here working on building a set of working pens. Damn hard work.

That's nice, wish we could get those guard rails around here. I built a new working pen, out of used railroad ties and 2X6 (actual measurement) oak lumber. Ran out of oak, and had to use treated 2X6's for part of it, but they work. We don't run many cattle thru ours, so it gets us by.

Great looking work Oak. How are guard rails to climb, in a hurry, if you understand?

Barry, a week or so back, our son was nearly in a bad spot over a bull that took umbrage over being fly tagged. 2x6's are my favored climbable fence. In my much younger days, I could be on one side at 10.00 AM, on the other side at 9.59 AM. As they say, discretion is the better part of valor. Live another day to "punch" more cattle, it's the cattle that do most of the punchin; however.

An unemployed Jester, is nobody's Fool.
the only real difference between a good tracker and a bad tracker, is observation. all the same data is present for both. The rest, is understanding what you're seeing.

A few years ago I was running calves into the loading chute pen while shipping. 3 or 4 turned back on me in the ally. Of course I stepped out hollering and waving my arms to turn them back. They didn't. First one plowed me to the ground, and another stepped on my hand. Broke my hand and peeled the hide right off. Wish I'd had gloves on. I ain't as quick as I used to be...

A machinery scalper not far from here was killed by his bull after he took it to the vet for semen check. The vet went back out, and found him dead in the pen.

Nice place, nice set up. Good pens help with safety to cowboys and cattle. I built a version of the Oklahoma State model out of oil field pipe. 12' lane with 12' gates opening into pens along the way leading to a big 12' circle with solid sides, feeding cattle into the chute. Dr. Temple Grandin did a lot of work on decreasing stress on cattle, they made a movie about her work and her life. My sorting lane is a lot longer than the OSU layout below, but does have the solid sided crowding set up. http://www.grandin.com/http://pods.dasnr.okstate.edu/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-1998/F-1219web.pdfDF .

Plus a TMR mixer and tractor is housed there. Second floor has a granary at one end and rest is for kicker baler hay bales.

It's the best I've seen and I studied a bunch of them. My set up is 34 years old and I don't see anything I'd change. Repainted the pipe once, minor repairs along the way. DF
