Go to atf.gov and you will say I can ship it to myslf in care of someone else
You're reading the ATF rules incorrectly. The above statement applies to a firearm you already own and have possession of if you want to ship it out of state to yourself. For example, say you plan a hunt in Alaska with your friend John Smith and want to ship your rifle from Illinois to use on your hunt. You can ship it to yourself care of John Smith and he can hold it until you arrive and take possession. That has nothing to do with what you're trying to do which is purchase a firearm out of state. You have to have Cabela's send the gun to a local FFL who then does the background check and transfers it to you.

How can you be six hours from a Cabela's? Remember, they can transfer it to you in a store in an adjacent state. That prevents ISP from adding you to their illegal NICS/registration/database anyway.

I am beginning to think that the OP has a misunderstanding of the laws and Cabela's is doing everything correctly.

Cabela's is being acquired by Bass Pro Shops; could the acquisition and change in policies be the reason?

Almost any part of Illinois is within 200 miles of a Cabela's at worst. Seems to be more about whining than fact.

Go to atf.gov and you will say I can ship it to myslf in care of someone else. The post office requires an ffl send it. Cabelas won't complete the transaction until tranfer is done so why send it to another ffl? Of course they could be wrong. As far as those shipping rules quoted it depends on who you talk to.
Impressive.

Go to cabelas and get rifle. Would you drive 12 hours? Go to cabelas and get rifle. Would you drive 12 hours? What the hell are you talking about 12 hours ! Seriously - they will ship the gun from free to any other Cabelas store and there are a bunch of them within 1-3 hours of you. If you want the gun, buy it and have them ship it to the cabelas that is close to you then get it.

Did they transfer it at the store? If so, why do they say it has to be shipped to an ffl? If you own it you can ship it to yourself, a friend, Or they can hold it at the post office. It is $50 to transfer through Cabelas. Some ffls want to get paid just to accept it. One salesman told me he would go through my ffl but when I asked about the online agreement to pick it up at the store he had me contact shipping. She didn't work there anymore. One person in shipping said they don't deal with that and passed the buck. Bunch of nonsense.
A sidenote about shipping your own guns to yourself. 3-4 ffl holders didn't tell me about being able to send them to myself. They either wanted the money or didn't know . The dumb ass flare has been lit!

Online gun buying 101:
1. Don't be a dumbazz
2. Pay for the gun
3. Send seller a copy of your dealers FFL license
4. Make sure the seller has both items in 2. and 3. above.
5. Don't be a dumbazz
6. Wait for your firearm and transfer at the FFL dealer.

Cabelas does charge to ship - used guns, at least. Just had a gun transferred to the local store, cost $25. Same cost to ship to my house with my C&R.
They ain't going to ship any gun to a non-licensee, and I wouldn't be surprised ifthere are guns they won't ship at all to Illinois, New York, New Jersey, California, etc.

Cabela's will not utilize other FFL's to sell firearms. It's as easy and plain as that. As mentioned, they will ship to other Cabela's. Work within those parameters or just walk away.

Cabela's is by far the easiest box store I've used to buy a gun. Hell, they'll even dicker on prices. Especially, if they've been there a while.

New, perhaps, but you can certainly utilize FFL's to purchase from the 'Gun Library' Q: How are the firearms shipped? A: Firearms are shipped via Fed Ex to licensed firearms dealers only. A signed copy of the FFL must be in our possession prior to shipment. Buyers must be of legal age to purchase firearms in their home state and must meet all federal, state and local restrictions and regulations. Only N.F.A. - antique firearms (pre-1898 mfg) may be shipped directly to customer http://www.cabelas.com/category/Gun-Library-FAQs/109559880.uts
