Was heading into Nashville and spotted what appeared to be a cross between a pimpmobile and a tundra. Was I seeing things or have they dropped making a pickup?

LOL yeah like Ford Dodges and Chebbies don't get pimped up. Tundra is still the best 1/2 ton pickup out there, nothing close.

I thought the Tundra has looked the same since 2008?

It has been the same since 07 or 08, but some of the upper-end models these days do have a lot of chunky plastic chrome stuck to them. The basic work-truck model looks better than many, with some plain alloy take-off wheels from Craigslist.
Now with even more aplomb

Designed to last? My buddy bought a slightly used one and paid extra for the extended warranty at $1,000. It's had close to $2,000 in repairs covered. Rear wheel bearings, some type of air motor inside the intake for emissions failed that was the single biggest repair. Maybe he got a lemon.

word is that a redesign is in the works for 19 but Toy land is all hush about it.
I have an 07 that I bought new with 118000 on it, rotors and regular maintenance is all that's ever been done, I've drove it pretty hard too, I take care of it but I sure don't baby it. don't think I could have bought a better truck in 07, especially one I could still be driving with no issues for almost 10 years.

His repairs pale in comparison to what I spent on a POS Silverado and last year a 2016 F150 that had to be bought back after 6500 very easy miles were put on it. FWIW my best friend is a ME with more then 30 years experience designing all kinds of exotic weaponry and now teaches Engineering after retiring. After a long string of brand x pickups he ended up with a 2007 Tundra and not one issue and it is used hard.

I don't think any 1/2 tons are "designed to last " any more unless you're driving to your office or picking up the kids from school.

I thought about it later, it could have been a titan. Had never seen such on the road before. Wonld not have even been appropriate to get flowers at the big box store on Saturdays.
whether nissan or toyota . . .
They should be embarrassed about producing the thing.
And we ain't gonna even talk about the owner here.
I am in the market for a new pickup (NO, not heavy hauler) but everything I read here says none are worth buying.
I had figured it would be my last truck( was even planning to go auto transmission) and from what I read here, even at my age I will outlast anything out there.

Well you won't have any choice on the auto transmission unless you buy a tiny truck. Most are going with 8 and 10 speed transmissions. I have a Ram 1500. No issues hauling Sheetrock, lumber, 4-wheelers, groceries, baseball/softball equipment, firearms, bikes, camping gear, etc. All with Hemi/8-speed auto combo.
Camp is where you make it.

The only full sized pickups available with manual trannys now are Dodge 2500 and 3500's with the diesel. No gas engine will have it these days.
