In Zerk's defense, in the future I will factor in the field effect. Then again, that may be back to the future. Perhaps Michael J. Fox is really Chuck Hawks. How did such an easy question, become so deep? It's beginning to transcend time. I may need Jeff to send a doby in order to get it all factored in.
Excuse my spelling error. Make that a dooby. Zerk is particular about spelling.

Who here has actually shot a deer with 223? Obviously I have no way to know if you are telling the truth. But the guy with javelin poop was using 270.
Most common question for 223, would be is it big enough and is it legal. The former you are probably used to asking. Most people would consider it marginal, not for an adult, and most be selective with shot. I don't know why you don't like chuck hawks, other than he doesn't agree with you. But that is a long list. When talking deer cartidges, 223 doesn't even get brought up unless someone's like ar15s. Ar10 would be better, but they probably don't know what it is.
Look at a reloading manual it will be listed as varmit.
Bullet technology has increased expansion. But withe so many lightly recoiling rounds, why?

Myself: 2 With .223AI (if you will count that) 70 yards--in chest, out ham--62 TTSX--dropped at hit 200yards-shoulders--62gr TTSX-took a couple steps
2 friends used my rifle--both around150--same bullet--one ran a 30yard or so circle and dropped. The other went straight down. Recovered one bullet in spine.
Then there is the .22-250 which is my favorite. You

me, I have killed 3 deer including a big 10, and 4 pigs, the being selective with your shots comment is funny. If your an ass shooter, piss yourself when you get excited, prone to shooting into flocks of deer, or launching bullets at deer well over your ability to hit them at distance, then it don't matter what you choose to suck with.

I've killed a pile of deer with a .223 and a .222. Been doing it since the 80's. No problems.. Killed the third biggest buck of my life with a .222 in 1993. 172 lb's. dressed 8 point.. One 50 gr. soft point through the lungs at 125 yds. instant drop. Rack's hangin on the wall in my living room.

Big question I have is why , when so many other lightly recoiling cartridges? Cheap practice ammo is all I can think.

Why ? Because I can. I'm pretty careful with shot placement regardless of what I use. I've got several other rifles in .22-250, .243, 6.5 Creedmoor, 30-30, .308 and.30-06. Sometimes I just feel like taking the .223.

I never said you have to hunt with 45-70. I just like to buy guns and try different things. Since I know a few people using, I thought I would give it a shot. I don't know anyone, other than Internet hunting with some thing smaller than 6mm for deer.
I am.not making long shots. I like hunting up close. If you want to try something different, try intelligent dialogue.

I've killed several with .223AI, call it a +p....but I've killed more while fireforming .223AI brass, which actually looses a little pressure so call it a -p. Mix in a handful with a standard .223 and it seems it works fine. I've never lost one with any of those variations and I've never caught a bullet with one of them.
