If guys are saying its safe simply because a chronograph told them so , I urge some caution.

Thanks Starman.
That's why I'm asking some questions. I realize that by the time pressure signs show up you may be already over pressured. I'm thinking that 65,000 psi should be about max but I have no way to measure for it. I'd like to shoot the 130TTSX at that speed and am being cautious. The word "SAFELY" was used with intentionality.

RL26 is probably the safest powder to use when trying to get 3200fps out of 130gr, Barnes TTSX bullets. with 5 shots I got 3209 Average.
Quickload said it should be 3207fps at 58,324 psi. pretty close. All the other loads looked to be in the lower 60,000psi range. MRP would be the next most likely candidate.

I know we are living in times where there are a lot of cool offerings out there, and efficiency/shootability play parts in peoples choices more so these days, but it's still hard to argue with a sleek 130 like the Etip or NAB at 3,100+ from a 22" barrel as being a dang effective and balanced package for any deer hunt, anywhere.....

oooooh yes you can. I know this............. I've been loading and chrono'ing 270's for 30 years.

My current standard load for my HVA 270 with a 23.6" barrel is 60 g. of IMR7828 ssc powder, Hornady 130 g. bullet. Hodgdon on-line max with that bullet is 60.2 g. This load averages 3122 fps. in the HVA rifle with no signs of excess pressure and I have shot many rounds of that load. Earlier this year I chronographed the same load in my 270 Kimber 84L Montana (24" barrel) and it registered 3236 fps sick. I thought that 3122 fps. was humming along, but 3200fps. + greatly exceeded my comfort level.

Needless to say I did not fire a second round nor will I use that load in the Kimber.

Other owners of 270 Kimbers post their velocities with RL 26 with 60 g. or more of powder and the 150 g. NPT of around 3,000 fps. My rifle reaches 3,000 fps with 58 g. of RL26. So what seems fine in one rifle may not do well in another. The moral for each rifle is to work up carefully from below and watch the chronograph.

The other moral is to run the numbers on a 130 going 3000 fps vs. 3,200 fps and you might see that it's not worth the worry.....

New to the forums...I guess this will be my first post! I'm averaging 3,268 fps from a stock Model 70 Sporter (24" barrel) with this ammo at slightly less than MOA. I'm also getting 2,976 fps with the Precision Hunter 145 Gr ELD-X at .5 MOA. Between those two cartridges I can kill anything I'll ever point that rifle at, and likely can't improve enough with handloads to justify the effort.

Needless to say I'm a fan of M70s (I own three and a fourth may be in my future) and Hornady factory ammo.

I am getting this easily with R26 but as far as performance a few years ago some of the factory 270 ammo was really anemic. Some loads clocked in the high 2800 range and an average of all these pipsqueak loads was still at mid 2900 fps yet these killed just fine. No apparent loss in effectiveness for what is almost a reduced load for the 270.

Same with the 270 vs 270 WSM they are closer velocity wise now with the newer powders but I still expect more out of the WSM. Can I see a difference in the field? Nope.

I have a new 270 WSM that I'm just breaking in, but so far my velocities are very similar to the 270. If this keeps up after I've put another hundred rounds or os through the barrel I may well sell it and just stick with the 270.

My .270 WSM, with a 24" barrel, easily does 3300 fps, using a Nosler 130 gr. E-Tip bullet. Accuracy is superb. At 3350 fps, accuracy falls off a bit.

My most accurate .270 WSM loads in a 24" barrel run between 3200 and 3250 with a 130gr bullet. I'm keeping this particular rifle because the accuracy is so outstanding.
