Howdy,

Trying to choose a scope for my 338 rcm. Right now I am trying to decide between VX-R and VX-3i. I'll use the rifle for elk in the Rockies. Any other Scopes I should take a hard look at? What are your thoughts on illuminated reticles?

Thanks,

Mike

You're going to buy 600 scopes?

That's a lot of scopes for one rifle........

In the 600 buck range I would look at the Leupold 2-12x42 VX 6 Windplex with illuminated dot for 699....Best deal going right Now and a Hell of a scope.

Do you have the 20 inch barrel with sights, or the 22 inch - no sights?

Makes a difference if you have the factory sights, there isn't a lot of clearance forward of the front ring for a long scope.

I use a VX-3 in 2.5-8x36 on the 20 inch RCM, tried a VX2 2-12 that was too long to get a scope cap on with the rear sight clearance.

If it's dark enough to need the lighted reticle, it's probably after or before legal shooting hours. However, with aging eyes, the dot can help a bit.

A vote for the VX-3I 2.5-8 great compact scope that will be well suited to your RCM.

I keep trying to convince myself to try something other than Leupold but I never quite do. The only reason I was considering the illuminated scope was to help my ageing eye. Seems to be fading on my in my mid 40's. I currently have the 20" barrel but I'm probably going to have an aftermarket barrel installed when I send the rifle in for a bedding.

Thanks a bunch for all the replies!

Mike
