Lyman and Redfield made receiver sights for the 40/45. The Redfield is in the 108 series and the Lyman is in, I think, the 55 series of sights. Both are hunter style sights with screw instead of micrometer adjustments for elevation and windage and the Lyman was factory installed on the 45 Super Sporters. You will have to notch the stock for mounting either. Keep your eye on eBay as they do show up from time to time.

By the way, we may constitute the only two guys on this forum with an interest in Savage 40/45s. Just sayin'.

The correct receiver sight for a Savage Super Sporter Model 45, the sight that came on it, is the Lyman #40.
If there is a Redfield #102 receiver sight made for the Savage Super Sporter Models 40 and 45, I've never seen a rifle equipped with one and don't know what alpha-suffix style it is.
eBay or one of the big sight guys, like Gary Fellers in Fort Worth, TX, are probably your best bet.
*** I am NOT recommending that you buy anything from Mr. Fellers, just that he and vintage sight dealers like him are possible sources of a Lyman #40 ***

Here's an old thread with an interesting set-up for these rifles, also shows a receiver sight - Miller_Kodiak_Mount_on_Savage The problem would be finding one of those mounts. Redfield lists the 102 V for the 40 & 45. Vaver lists the no. 35-M4D "mounts to left side of receiver using holes provided". The 40's are a big enough action one of Vavers huge sights might look OK. The problem would be finding one, Vaver listed one for the 99 Savage and no one has yet to even find a picture.

I stand humbly corrected. The Lyman is a 40 and not a 55, the Redfield is a 102 and not a 108 (my mistake, there is no 108), and there is some interest in these rifles. I like them. One reason is that my first Savage rifle of interest, the 99, has been hammered with attention and they have become a bit pricey - ruining some of the fun of collecting and shooting while the 40/45 is still pretty much what the 99 was about 20 years ago. Largely unexplored and reasonably priced. Its nice to see some feedback on these rifles.

I have a Redfield 102 that was made for the 40/45 but the base does not have a letter designation. I can provide a picture if someone is interested.

Am I correct in remembering that the Lyman #40 was offered for the 340 also, but that particular sight is wrong for the 40/45? I seem to recall someone pointing that out here a long time ago.

The Lyman 40s I've seen for the Savage 340 have an extension on the base for fitting up to the scope holes. The 40s made for the 40/45s don't. I know this isn't what you asked but I couldn't help myself. I suspect that the 40s made for the 40/45 rifles predate the sights Lyman made for the 340 as they were a factory offering on the Super Sporter. But I could be wrong as evidenced above in my first response to this thread!

I think that the Lyman #40ss was made for the Savage 340 series rifles. Similar name, but a totally different sight that might work on a Super Sporter Models 40/45, but would require two new holes to be D&T.

No, what you say sounds right. I sorta kinda knew they were different but had the same model number.

It's a tough rifle for receiver sights due to the location of the safety and the bolt handle. Not to mention the itty bitty mounting screws. I tried a couple other sights on my ought six and nothing worked good enough for fitting up. I have a Savage 40 in 250 with a pre war Brlding and Mull scope and mount. Anyone know anything about this set up as I'm having no luck finding information.

The problem with the above Redfield is that the bolt handle will likely hit the windage adjustment screw when it's cycled. The Lyman 40 and Redfield 102 sights literally have nothing that protrudes to the right of the aperture mount. It's a tight fit.

Thanks, guys, I knew you fellas would come through. S99VG, you and I have and shoot the 40/45 's ( makes us lucky). My two m40's hang over the closet door in the bedroom ---- ticks my wife off, but like I tell her, how many people can say the last thing they saw before the lights went out were a pair of m40's . Again, thanks for the info and now on to the search.

I had one once. I gave it to my non-gun nut BIL who uses it once a year to deer hunt. I'm glad he likes it, I didn't. He is still working on the two boxes of ammo I gave him for it 15 years ago...

I wonder if this Vaver would fit a 40/45? I think it's for a 19-33, not sure. The relief cut on the back side looks like it might allow for the safety tab. Very well made sight. Screw hole spacing is .600" (My first trial pics hosted by Imgur. I'm finding them much quicker and easier to work with than Photobucket.)
