DLLALDER: I have not seen a complete season in Montana closed, but I have seen vast areas "closed" until the fire danger has past.
Happened to me and my Hunting partner once in 1974'ish and we were unable to Hunt Deer and Antelope that season (I was a non-resident then) so we were busted that year as I could NOT change vacation days.
Worst part was the Deer season was to open the day after we arrived and we were notified in person by sheriffs and game wardens to leave the area (no Hunting!) that night and not to return until further notice.
That was a thousand mile trip (each way!) for a great disappointment.
Pray for rain!

Elk hunting... One of the few times a man can say "fat cow" and not get in trouble:

Thanks, Varmitguy. I will stay in touch with our outfitter. Best I can tell the area around Plains doesn't have any fires going.

I believe Thompson Falls has an active fire. As does Libby and Eureka has two.

Some years ago I was bowhunting deer when I ran into these guys. They were all satellite bulls. The herd bull was up the hill with about 20 cows. He was probably the biggest bull I've ever seen. I couldn't ever get a photo of him. The 6 point in the 1st photo was easily big enough to have his own harem but he didn't stand a chance against that big guy. I got a quick look at him from about 3 or 400 yds. It's possible that he was an 8 point but I couldn't get a good point count in the brush.
