I picked up my second 99F, I know they're not popular with the collectors, but they suit me. At first glance this one looks nice, not even drilled for sling swivels, but the stock was damaged right at the butt plate. Looks like it was too close to the campfire. If I repair it, it will be noticeable. If I re-stock it it won't be original, unless someone out there has a correct extra stock, it won't even be Savage. What do you think?

Nice rifle. If you plan to hunt with it I would leave it alone.Something to talk about at Deer camp. You could make up a couple of stories about it.I hunt with a F myself 358.Its my favorite rifle to hunt with.I like the F's.All Savage 99 are collectors to me F's also if they have condition ask Jed <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Pre-mil of course.

Scott, the buttstock and forearm don't look like they match to me. Might just be me? Might watch fleabay for a new stock, or keep the originals and pick up a replacement to put on it. As long as the originals stay around you aren't hurting anything by restocking.

Let me know how it shoots? A couple of folks here have mentioned the 99F in 308 has a hefty kick.

Thanks for your replies, it is matching wood, just looks funny in the pic for some reason. I would like to buy a NOS stock for it, am I right in thinking that the F's are somewhat thinner than the EG's? I'll keep watching ebay just the same, maybe get lucky..........Scott

Curious about this remark:
"I picked up my second 99F, I know they're not popular with the collectors,"
Why are "F's" not as collectable? because they were made toward the post-Mil era?

The purists don't like them on account of the tang safety among other things. I like them , I'm left handed.

The 99F with a 200 grain Nosler Partition will kill anything alive, including the shooter. That combo kicks like a mule.

I think a nice conditioned lever safetied F is becoming quite popular among collectors. I have one but it is more shooter grade. But, I am kind of with Mike - all original Savage M99's, if they are pre-mil - are collectors.

The post-mil 99F with the gold trigger and tang safety isn't nearly as popular here as the pre-mil 99F with the lever safety. Just browse some of Jed's posts and you'll see there are some serious fans here.
