Can't wait for deer season. Archery's opening this weekend, but it will just never match up to the tradition that is deer camp. The smell of the woods. The great meals, the card games. The cry of the geese as they move about. Deer season just can't come fast enough.

actually, yes it can. It needs to slow it's pace. I'm not in the least prepared for it.

Aw come on Tom-you got a gun? Got some ammo? Got a knife? You're good to go-make the rest work on the fly.

Just don't do like I did and leave the bolt for your rifle three hours away at the house.

Leaving at 4am Sunday morning heading up to northern BC for some mountain goat and moose. Starting to pack. I will make extra note on making sure the bolt is with the gun.

Yeah, those hunting knife charges just don't work out that well..... Have a great hunt, duck. We should match up some time when you're back in town.

Been quite eventful the past three days . On Tuesday I took Linda to have knee replacement surgery. It was successful and they actually had her walking within three hours after surgery.
I brought her home yesterday afternoon. So now we are on a round robin of walking exercising and just generally resting and recuperating. Luckily our daughter from Chicago flew down and has been the greatest at making sure things get done and in the proper sequence , for the proper length of time, cooking cleaning and doing washing machine loads. I don't know how I would have gotten along without her.
Deer season is fast approaching here in the upstate of South Carolina. Sept. 15th. starts archery here. It started August 15th. in the southern part of the state. Muzzle loader starts October 1st and gun season starts October 10th. This year the farmer has turned over an additional part of his land to us to hunt and we have been busy scouting , putting out feeders, cameras and stands. Pictures from the cameras have not been showing any bucks but they are there.
One of my hunting buddies who is also a good friend and neighbor and also my gunsmith had heart bypass on Tuesday. I don't know what his deer season will be like. I do remember that in 2008 when I had by pass surgery I was prohibited from shooting for six months and also told to NEVER in my life attempt to draw a bow again.
I sincerely hope that you all have a great deer season0000. I am looking forward to seeing pictures. Of course when I hunt this year, as in past years, I will be wearing my Camp Chickenbuck hat and t shirt.
Oh before I close, I might mention that we had a most unfortunate occurrence here in the upstate yesterday. It seems a young man was night hunting wild pigs. (Perfectly legal here)
There was a man and wife hunting the opposite side of the property unaware that the young man was there. The young man was in a kneeling position and the lady fired at an image in her thermal scope killing him. Awful thing to happen. Be careful out there day or night.

Had a fun day in the woods today. Started the morning by shooting a bit less than 100 rounds. Some of which I loaded for my 7x57 Mauser., win m70. After testing different loads all summer I was finally able to dial it in. It likes 140gr nosler partitions and imr 4350. As well as 120 grain NBT, and varget.

I got it to 7/8" with the partitions and 3/4" with the nosler ballistic tips.

There were 6 bucks on Jackhammers trail cam. 2 were good ones too.

Be sure of your targets out there folks, I'd say it looks like thermal is not a very good way of being sure.... very sad.

Yes, that's a horrible incident. I didn't even know that existed. It's a silly thing to use if you ask me.

Believe it or not, I saw 3 scrapes in the woods yesterday. They were all 2 on the same overgrown logging road. They weren't big, but there was no question they were scrapes.

I have been seeing some exciting things in the woods boys. Plenty of bucks on trail cams, some small rubs, even an honest to goodness scrape line. I haven't seen one of those in some time.

Well both actually. The biggest buck so far is north of Duluth, but in a different place than you've been. WI has tons of deer where hunt. There are 6 different bucks in one area, 2 are 8pts.

Best of Luck to all you fellows! I have 2 nice 8pts. a heavy 6pt and a 3pt, on the same cam, season opens here a week form today! I hope to be Blood trailing one of the 8s about this time next week!
