Been really slow to buy a crossbow. My eyes are burning from reading reviews and watching youtubes of what's available. I had every intention of buying a Ten Point Turbo GT but I keep seeing positive things about the Centerpoint crossbows. Anyone own one of these units? Thoughts? I wanted to ask before I ordered this. http://www.crosman.com/tormentor-whisper-380$338 on jet.com and there is a $50 manufacturer rebate on this model to boot.

Actually just ordered the thing. $318 with promo code Save15, free shipping and still have the $50 rebate to mail in. Can't go wrong with that much bow for $268.

From watching several of these being shot in our deer management group, I don't think you will be disappointed.
One of the retired guys puts down 10-20 deer each season, his is spot-on, and no failures that he has mentioned.
I've considered one as a back-up crossbow on more than one occasion.

The supplied scope is likely the first upgrade along with bolts.

Thoughts?

Agreed - the factory glass is probably a placeholder at best.
For the Hawke - don't know on that one, but I think there was some positive feedback on it in one of the other crossbow threads.
I'm using the Redfield Revenge, they work for what I need and have be easy to adjust to different speeds on a couple of different crossbows.
I have not not had what I would consider good return on lighted reticles in most crossbow scopes, either too bright - washed out the picture, or too fragile to last more than a trip or two.

They are fast but loud. A buddy has one. He had a trigger safety issue, good luck with warranty issues as made in China. I have had and Excalibur and a ten point , love the ten point. Customer service is tops and it is as good as u hear about. I bought a used one and am super happy.

They're one of the quietest economically priced crossbows out there. One of the few with built in rubber string stops from the factory. I've compared mine directly with a Wicked ridge warrior G-2, a Parker [forget model} and a Barnett Game crusher and it's way quieter than any of those while being substantially faster to boot. It's also the only one with a machined aluminum arrow track and is warranted for 5 years by Crosman. Mine is shooting a 425 grain arrow at 356 fps. and keeping them all in a 3" bull at 45 yards is a cinch. Lots of youtube reviews out there and damn tough to find one with anything negative to say about them. One where the guy compares it directly with his 1200.00 Ten Point and has to admit it shoots every bit as good and is substantially quieter.

Well I can say from my experience, not yours, that my buddies centerpoint 370 was noticeably louder than my used 10 point venom which I got real cheap.
As to warranty experience my buddy had some real issues with getting the safety fixed in a reasonable time period, took over a month.
So I am not so arrogant as to say someone else's experience is wrong, just different than mine.
5 years from now see how well the customer support and warranty service is for a centerpoint model sold today and get back to me. Then you can say I am wrong.

Don't know how service will be in the future but I Suspect good through the 5 years guaranteed by Crosman. A coworker of mine had the string break on his. Called Crosman requesting a new string. They told him to send it in as they wanted to examine it to make sure everything was OK, no cracks in the limbs etc. before putting a new string on it. Two weeks later he received a brand new one from Crosman. I'd call that pretty good service. Oh and BTW, for the 209.00 I paid for mine brand new I'm not going to worry about how service will be after 5 years. It Won't owe me a thing after that length of time considering the price.

Next to decide on which broad heads and bolts to buy. Want to avoid mechanicals and would like to stick with the fixed variety.

I'm going to be using Muzzy fixed 3 blade broadheads on 20" Bloodsport carbon arrows with brass inserts.

The Horton/Hawke 2-7 showed up today along with the Carbon Express Pile Driver bolts. Tomorrow the target block arrives and my broadheads. Ended up opting on the Rage Hypodermic 2" 125 grain. Got some hunting buddies who got me to opt for the mechanical.
The replacement scope is immediately obvious in how superior it is to the one supplied with the combo. For $50, doubt I can not win at this point

Sighted the new cross bow in this afternoon.
442 grain Carbon Express Piledriver 20" bolt 125 grain field point
Confirmed with chronograph 327 fps. Hitting a quarter out to 30 yards. Cross hair is dead on at 20 yards, little low at 30 yards and the first pin is dead on at 40 yards. 2nd pin is 55 yards.
God damn laser beam. Super quiet.

Unbelievable that something this inexpensive shoots so accurate and quiet. My cousin shot his TenPoint along side me and the difference in sound was very noticeable. The tenpoint was very wide comparatively too. Pretty sure Nolan ordered a Centerpoint last night when I left.

I think we are seeing the same trend emerging in crossbows that we have seen the budget rifle markets.
Accuracy doesn't have to be expensive, you can get a sub-MOA RAR, Savage Axis, etc. without breaking the bank.
The question will long term durability, but from what I've seen locally, you should be good for a few years of hunting.

The adjustable stocks have them on my radar. I have two kiddos and that'd make it simple for us all to use the same one. The price is attractive as well.

Been playing with this crossbow quite a bit. The more I shoot it, the more I want to congratulate myself. What a gem of a find in the category of “most for the least”.
Anyone shopping for a crossbow? Buy one of these and laugh.
