(*as a total aside, Madeline Kahn truly had an amazing voice. She did opera and was professionally trained and could run with the best. She turned to comedy but truly had the gift.)

Exactamundo!
Frankie Lane wrote the theme song, thinking it was for a real Western. Said he wouldn't have done it if he had known it was a spoof.....something Mel Brooks knew...hence Frankie was told it was a Western....

Comedy genius.

Yeah, just like Dr. Strangelove was the dumbest end of the world movies ever made... neither of them were intended to be serious works of cinema, they were C O M E D Y.
Mel Brooks is a comedic genius. Blazing Saddles is one of the funniest movies ever made, right up there with Animal House. But I think History of The World: Part One edges them both out for top spot.
And yes, Madeline Kahn lends a huge contribution to every comedy she takes part in. What a talented voice, and she was pretty darned easy on the eyes as well.

Blazing Saddles was the first movie my future wife and I went to together. The movie was just opening at the local theater and I had no clue what it was about. It was our second date and we were trying to hold ourselves together but we failed totally. After the movie, I apologized for taking her to it, and she broke out laughing. I knew then I had a keeper.
I saw Blazing Saddles in the theater as a teen and laughed till I cried. Years later I caught the 1939 movie "Destry Rides Again". The plot to Blazing Saddles is a spoof of that movie. If you've never seen Destry, watch it. The German accent of Malene Dietrich as the dance hall girl with Jimmy Stewart playing the part of the Sheriff.
Gabby Johnson yelling "Hey, the sheriff is a n****r!" and a bell rings whenever he says the word "n****r".
Gabby Johnson ranting in front of a crowd and Howard Johnson telling everyone that he's glad that the children had the opportunity to hear authentic frontier gibberish.

Yup! Used that very line in a toll road proposal meeting one morning. The higher ups were not amused.
