I would let them practice with the lower recoil round, then resight the gun in before season and shoot the .44mag. Kid won't be able to tell.
Although a .44 spec will kill deer with no problem as well. Either way will work I suppose.

Before you condemn the people on the corner with their cardboard signs, let me tell you that when I got riffed when the economy tanked in '09 courtesy of the Kenyan at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue I stood out on busy street corners with my cardboard sign seeking employment. A lady called to me from her vehicle in the second lane from the curb, she insisted that I take $20.00 she told me that she admired my humility. While I didn't get any leads that lead to employment, several folks stopped to tell me places that were hiring, mostly things outside my field. I always put a $1.00 bill in the Salvation Army kettle, if I don't have a single I give them all the change I have in my pocket.

I would just stick with 44SPL, or subsonic 44Mag loads. Been using 240gn cast SWC for a few years out to 150yds, and haven't recovered a bullet yet. All deer drop within 10yds.

I used to shoot a lot of 200g flat nose lazercast over 7g titegoup in a 44 mag case. It was very little recoil and 1050fps from a 4" barrel. Switch it for a 200g xtp or gold dot and it should work fine.
