I have a CZ 550 Safari Magnum chambered in 458 Lott that is equipped with a set trigger which I used to like. On my last range session, I had a round chambered, went to set the trigger and BANG! It was a bit of surprise but the gun was pointed down range so no harm was done.
I have to admit, I don't trust the set trigger any longer as it is. Does any one know if the CZ guns with the set triggers tend to malfunction? I can happyily use the gun without a set trigger but if this is just a rare fluke I might get it fixed.

I do not want a set trigger on my dangerous game rifle. I would give guys a shout for one of their triggers. http://americanhuntingrifles.com/?page_id=72

Shaking head here as to why a dangerous game rifle even needs a set trigger....
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Grumulkin,
If you adjust the trigger so the unset trigger pull is 3-4 pounds, the set feature goes away. I've been hunting with a CZ 550 9.3x62 and 550 Magnum .416 Rigby for 15 years with their triggers adjusted that way, and never had a malfunction of any sort, whether in North America or Africa.
If you prefer replacing the trigger, Timney makes a typically excellent model for the 550's.

The factory set trigger can be adjusted to a great non-set trigger. When so adjusted, the trigger can't flex forward. The trigger slot in the bottom metal is pretty tight for triggers so adjusted. I broke a CZ trigger, taking the barreled action out of the stock. Those parts are MIM and break. I replaced it with a Timney. You could remove the bottom metal before removing the barreled action or enlarge the bottom metal trigger slot.
MIM breaks, Timney's are made of steel. The Timney sits farther back in the trigger guard compared to the factory trigger. I like that, too.
So, if I had a DG 550, it would have a Timney.

Well, I went out for a pleasant hour of target shooting today and when I chambered the second round of the day, the rifle discharged. Fortunately, the bolt was mostly closed but having 458 Lott recoil directed from the bolt to the palm of your hand isn't pleasant. Things have gone from the inconvenient category to the dangerous category so to a gunsmith it will go for a new trigger and not of the CZ variety. I'll probably go with Timney.

You could install the Timney yourself. It's not that hard.

I got the Timney trigger over 2 weeks after I had ordered it and after a phone call (they had apparently overlooked my order). Installation wasn't too hard but when installed in the action, the trigger was so far back that I couldn't get the bottom metal back on. I'll have to call Timney tomorrow and see if I can get a refund or exchange.
On a happier note, I found out what was wrong with the CZ trigger; a screw has loosened up. It had a lock washer on it but that apparently wasn't enough so I reinstalled the CZ trigger with both the lock washer and Locktite (not the high strength). The trigger now works like it's supposed to.

Mark Begich, Joaquin Jackson, and Heller resistance... Three huge reasons to worry about the NRA.
