My pal Bob picked up a Savage 99 in .243. It is a later model with metal clip, no rotor. The clip is metal, not like the abominations on the new savage bolt action rifles...just got one of those 111 synthetic bolt actions in .270 for son.
Anyhow, it has a serial number of E287275.
Nice shape, carved checkering, not stamped. Came with Williams rear sight, high scope mount and a fancy sling. Thinking a DL?
Any idea as to year made? Nearest I can guess is mid 70s.

I don't think the clips ever really changed but your 99 could date anywhere from the introduction of the C models in the early 60s until production ceased in, I think, the late-70s/early-80s. I wouldn't slam Savage too much for their current efforts as they have to do whats needed to stay competitive in what has got to be an increasingly tough business. For what they are, I'd rather have Savage out there producing something than going the route of Winchester.

Summer of 1984 is the date of your rifle. And it wouldn't be a 99DL, that would have a rotor magazine. Yours will be a model 99C.

According to Table B-4 in David Royal's book, E287275 was made in 1984.
