Below are some photos of today's deer hunting success with the .270 Win. The Barnes TTSX 110 grainer started about 3,460 feet per second and stopped after 23" of penetration. The recovered bullet weighs 105.5 grains. The range was 239 yards. I ranged the rock it was near when I fired. It was just about the same height as me across a canyon heading up the other side. When I saw it I sat down and put the reticle on the buck. When I thought the bullet would get to the chest I fired. Instantly something white came out of the entrance wound. I've never seen that before. Because my shoulder is damaged I can't work the bolt anymore without taking the rifle down. By the time I got back on the deer it was sliding down the steep slope. The entrance location is indicated by the knife point. The TTSX broke a couple ribs on the entrance side. It went through lots of paunch and the the heart on its way to the front of the offside shoulder.

I leaned the rifle in the antlers where it stopped to get the middle photo. It is one of the larger bodied blacktails I have killed. The chest was 16" back to belly. It had a nice 3X4 rack.

Rifle is a Weatherby Mark V six lug ultralight with a Bushnell 6500 4 1/2-30X50 in Talley lightweights. The brake is aluminum made by me. I can see bullet impacts with ease. The trigger is a factory trigger set at 20 ounces by a gunsmith. The factory fluted barrel is 24" long. The rifle weighs 8lb 1 oz.

Buck is certainly purty. I like those dark and heavy horns.

And as good as the 270win has been, it's even better with today's bullet/powder selections.

Nice one! They work indeed.

I haven't been without one since the early 80's, and none of them ever touched me inappropriately either.

Congrats Rich! That's a dandy!

I would have expected the TTSX to exit. I suppose the distance lowered the velocity enough that it didn't. What would you guess the impact velocity to have been?

Congratulations on a very nice blacktail. I've seen a few that big, but never during the season. I'd love to find one like that one of these days.

Thanks, guys. According to JBM the impact velocity was about 2,850 feet per second. Being a little old man I got to use the small wench I installed in the bed of the pickup. Worked like a champ! From shot to hooking the deer to the wench was an hour and a half.

My wench never wants to come hunting with me at all, let alone just sitting in the back of the truck all the time!

Awesome buck and bullet performance! I bought a couple of Federal factory loads (with the 110 TTSX) that were on clearance a couple years ago. In my old Belgium made BAR .270 they shoot .5 to .75" for 3 shots! I still have a full box and some change, keeping them for that "special hunt"! BTW, I would get in big time trouble if I called my little wife a "wench", don't know how you do it! ha

Nice buck! I've killed countless deer over the years with a 270 but I've never used Barnes bullets. I was always a Speer man and the deer never survived it.

Lucky guy. Got a deer then got a dear, in the pickup bed no less! What a day.

Lots of wenches would take exception to the expression "use". His must be a good sport.

I've tinkered with a bunch of different cartridges for deer. In my opinion, nothing works any better than the 270. Several others work great, but the 270 is in the "as good as it gets" category.

Building another 270 after fooling with many other cartridges I'm going back to my first centerfire deer killer, the awesome 270. But I just had to test all those .224, .243,.257, .264,.284,.308,.338,.358,.429 and .458 diameter bullets out! No complaints at all though. I'm going to use the old tried and true bullets, the 130 gr. Hornady, 150 gr. Ballistic Tips and some stashed 130 gr. Nosler solid base bullets. Probably going to sell my 280 AI as I could never really see that it was better than the 270 or as good as the 30-06.
