I went to the range last night to check the zero on my 30/06. It's exactly 2" high at 100 yards. I'll be using 180 Winchester 'Power Point" ammunition. Sounds like minute of elk to me. Season starts next Saturday 10/14.

Rifle is Remington 700 LH. It's scoped with a 6x Leupold. I like it simple.

Sounds like a good set up. 6X is too much most of the time where I hunt. 4X works but I like a 2-7 in case the opportunity is presented to shoot out there a few hundred yards.

Excellent.

Am a huge believer in the 30-06 cartridge. In the past year it's given me black bear, antelope, mule deer, elk, wolf and grizzly.

You're likely well-set, riflewise, for a successful season.

Best of luck. Guy

Sound like elk medicine for sure. I really like the Power Point bullet. Took a few moose over the years with my 300 win before I started reloading ammo. Good luck on your hunt.

1st elk I ever shot was with a Remington 700 '06 and a 165gr partition. Played around with a lot of other combinations in the 20 years since but not sure I've found anything better yet.

Yup, that's good. And the WW Power points are very underrated. They are excellent game bullets.

Didn't you know...the .30-06 is no longer capable of reliably killing elk.....

Colorado bob: Best of luck to you this season!
I do fear for the worst for you though, as some on this site prognosticate that you are severely handicapping yourself by using the obsolete 30/06 cartridge and the Leupold scope which is incapable of holding zero!
Laughable, both of these contentions, that are held by a few ignoramuses on this site!
I own a pre-64 Model 70 in caliber 30/06 with a Leupold 3x9 variable scope on it - I used this Rifle to Hunt Elk, Blacktailed Deer, Mt. Goat, Mule Deer, Antelope, Blacktailed Deer and took it on my one and only Moose Hunt.
That Rifle and scope BOTH performed flawlessly for several decades for me - until I decided to retire them!
Once more best of luck to you this fall and prove the few "naysayers" hereabouts wrong again, PLEASE!

I haven't used my 06's on as much game as VarmitGuy, but my late wife and I used them on whitetails, antelope, black bear, moose, and elk.. I like rifles so we haven't used it much the last few years.. This fall maybe..

Agreed, Winchester Power Points are very very good in 180 grain in the 30.06

I've used this rifle & a Leupold Varx-III 2.5x8 for the past 40 + years. It's killed everything that I've shot at. Antelope, blk bear, elk , deer, moose, bighorn sheep, mtn goat, oryx, TX hogs and mtn lion. Killed them all with 180 grain bullets. Sometimes it's a handload with Hornady interlocks but most times it's either Core-lokts or Power-Points. I've settled on the Power-Point in the past few years. I updated the scope a few years ago with a newer Leupold, it's a little brighter for me. Bob

I inherited a bunch of guns and reloading supplies from a cousin 3 or 4 years ago. There were about 1500 power point bullets in the deal (.270-150grain). So we started using them to shoot WT and also our big feral Russian boar. I suspect the large boars are tougher than or at least tough as elk, and the .270W weaker than the .30-06 with 180s. The Winchester power point has proved totally adequate and to my notion is the most consistently DRT load we shoot. I don't see any reason the .30-06 would not perform equally or probably better than our loading.

A 111 year-old cartridge, factory ammo, a wrong-handed rifle and a fixed-power scope is a sure recipe for failure. wink

Best of luck to you on your hunt.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

Yep. Another reason I like them: they are surprisingly/exceptionally accurate in my rifles too....
