I see that the latest Model Seven Stainless is available in the 300 WSM. Even though the barrel is a short 20 inch......can one expect the velocity to be higher than the 308 win in the same barrel length?

I wonder if that is a typo, as all of the Remington Sevens that I've chambered for WSM or RSAUM cartridges had 22" barrels.

I see no difference in the 300 and 308 in a barrel that short other than noise/ amount of flames coming out the end...

The muzzle blast from a 20" bbl 300 WSM is impressive.............

Oh, and by the way, the answer to your original question is.. yes, the velocity is going to be higher by a good bit in a 300 WSM compared to a .308. How much, I couldn't say, but it will be higher. Will also have more recoil and muzzle blast too because you're burning a good bit more powder.

In the past I had both an older 7-08 and 7 SAUM stainless Remington model 7's. At that time, the 7-08 came with a skinny 20" barrel, the 7 SAUM came with a fat 22" barrel. I thought the one barrel was way too light, the other way too heavy. Also, the stock weighed something like 38oz, IIRC and it really made the skinny barrel muzzle light. If I had one now, I'd seriously consider one of the new B&C stocks for one.

If one bases opinion on actual chrono testing, the 300 WSM has the advantage, and is faster than the 308 at the same barrel lengths. 20" is not that short, and still magnum level velocity, for whatever that's worth.

I wouldn't worry about a 20" barrel, as they are handy, and why one would choose a M7 in the first place, but I would be concerned about whether the WSM rounds feed well, barrel twist and mag capacity.

I'm not saying Remington's specs are correct, as I haven't seen one, but I would also question those specs because they are saying that mag capacity is the same as 308 rounds, unless they are using a detach mag to solve all those issues...if so, that would be a viable option.

For anything I would want a M7 to do, a 308 or other standard round would be fine.

.......................................No comparison....... 300 WSM velocities even from a 16.5" barrel, easily exceed 308 speeds out of a 24" barrel let alone from a 20" barreled 308.

The same 180 gr factory ammo that gave Quinn 2796 fps from his test Ruger Frontier in the above link, got me a 2819 average from my 300 WSM Ruger Frontier.

Then came along RL17...........2917 fps w/180 grain Horn IB. (66 gr RL17 max load)....

Yep....A 20" barreled Remy Model 7 300 WSM will easily better a 308 with any barrel length.

Considering a 300WSM has 300-400 fps more speed than 308 from traditional barrels I don't think it'll have any trouble beating it with 4" less barrel. I'd expect it to still be 200-300 fps faster than a 308 with a 24" barrel. If both are fired from a 20" barrel I'd expect the 300 to loose a little more speed, but still have a 250-350 fps advantage.

There is a better than even probability that the Remington catalog has the barrel length listed incorrectly for the WSM. All of their prior Seven WSMs have had 22" barrels.

Until you find out the actual length, I wouldn't put much effort into worrying about it.

The WSM case is too long for the mdl 7 IMO.

The Model Seven takes the same mag box as a 700, so if it works in one it works in the other.
