Got a nice 6x7 herd bull last Tuesday, October 2nd in NM. Hunting was extremely slow this time, with not many elk seen, compared to previous years. Almost full moon and warmer temps? No idea....The bulls had, for all practical purposes, pulled off the cows this past week on this ranch and bugling was just about nonexistent. I caught this guy, along with about 20 cows and a smaller bull, at last light in a park. He was about 100 yards away from the cows, as was the smaller bull....just checking them out. No rutting activity. I made a 342 yard shot, quartering on, with my Sako 338, loaded with 225 grain North Forks and that was that. The shot traveled crosswise, through the heart and lungs and exiting the ribs on the far side. Afterwards I saw six bears and other assorted critters as shown below.
