I have been reading everyone's posts on my rifle battery thread over on the AR forum and thinking. Since I am an historian and have an affinity for "older" things, how about a battery of rifles based on Herr Mauser's designs? This would also give one an excuse to build some rifles( like we rifle nuts really need one) which is always much more fun than using straight factory guns.
First, in keeping with a relatively low cost theme, how about using the KBI-Charles Daly Mauser action ($250-300.00) with a Lothar Walther barrel ($400.00 fitted? extremely accurate and very German to boot) set in a Boyd's Laminated or Walnut stock ($150.00) with a Timney or other appropriate replacement trigger ($75.00-100.00 pull at 2.5lbs please)= $900.00-1000.00 ( really not much more than MSRP on a Remington or Winchester and the gunsmithing needed to correct the factory miscues).
Rifle #1: 5.56x57 Mauser (aka 22-6mm) W/26 inch medium heavy and a 10 x 40 Bushnell Elite 3200 Scope for Targets, Ground Hogs, Coyotes etc.
Rifle#2: 6.5x57 Mauserw/ 26 in medium heavy barrel and a 4-12 Leupold Vari-X I for long range deer, antelope etc.
Rifle#3: 7x57 Mauser W/ 22 Inch Barrel and a 2x7 Leupold Vari-X I for general purpose Deer, Sheep etc.
Rifle#4: 9.3x62 Mauser w/22 inch Barrel and a 1.5-6 Sightron for Elk, Moose, Bear sized critters.
Rifle#5: 10.75x 68 Mauser(a neat wildcat if it doesn't exist as an "original Mauser" offering)w/24 inch barrel and a 2.5x Leupold backed up by good iron or express sights for great big ugly sorts of things (I.E. A naked, sexually aroused Hillary Clinton charging straight for you at close range )
What do U Think? and Thanks for the Input,

Can I have one of those rifles in .338WM? Those numbers remind me metric wrenches and sockets.

HB, I don't know about the smaller bores but I would go with:
257 Roberts 7X57 30/06 (everyone needs one of these ) 35 Whelen 375H&H
I'd also have all Leupold optics in matte black. All metalwork done up in matte rust blue also. Stocks would be bastone walnut along the Biesen lines. Maybe some goodies like skelton grip caps and ebony forearm tips. I'd chuck the CD mausers and use my favorite mauser clone - Win 70CRF!

hillbillybear,
Quite the line up, I like your style!
It's been my plan, that on my next custom rifle, to use a Lother Walther barrel.
Too make you set complete, you need somebody like Jack Belk to build them for you.

Hillbilly You may consider 6.5 x 55, 7x 57, 8x57, 9.3 x 62. Dont overlook a 8 mm 200 grain Partiton at 2650 fps. Very deadly. I think I hear my ancestors saying "Amen". Charlie

Hillbilly,
I like your choices the only thing I would suggest as a historian is use some type of older mauser action.
My battery is as follows;
6.5x55(Chilean Mauser 95), 7x57(Chilean Mauser 95), 30-06( FN Mauser 98), 35 Whelen (FN Mauser 98), 375 H&H (Brno 602) and adding a 416 Taylor (FN Mauser 98).
Just My .02 worth

Thanks for the comments everyone. Many of my ancestors came from Germany too and I think they would be pleased with the choices.
The reason I didn't choose an older, more period appropriate action is cost. The KBI action, while not exactly the cat's meow is servicable and made of modern steels without the need to fix the safety, bolt handle, etc.. I would probably choose, if possible and no $$$ issues, a 1909 Argentine or one of the other Pre WWI 98 derivatives.
One of the Model 70 CRF's would be probably the ultimate choice here with a top quality handmade XXX Walnut stock but this would completely kill off the low-cost idea.
For those who want non-metric calibers (i.e. .338 win mag or 375 H&H) this would ruin my great idea of a Mauser "tribute" gun. It simply must be metric and of the proper German antecedents ( If U truly believe this German antecedent BS I got a Swamp in Arizona I'll sell you real cheap )
Good Shooting, HBB
