In 2013 I went to the Yukon and hunted Dall sheep with Dickson Outfitters. I posted a picture heavy travel log here and of course Photobucket has now left that post worthless. At the end of that post was a picture of me standing on Wood street in Whitehorse and I promised I'd be back. September 29 I was backed in Whitehorse, this time for moose. I'll post this as a daily journal, please bear with me as I operate from a different photo hosting service. I apologize for the low quality of some the pictures but we did not have a lot of good picture taking weather.

My buddy Curt and I left my house in Indiana at 4:00 am on September 29 and a few flights later we arrived in Whitehorse at 8:30 pm. However, none of our luggage arrived. We knew it made it to Vancouver as we retrieved it to clear Customs. Air Canada informed us they had bumped luggage to balance the plane and it would arrive on the midnight flight. Teena Dickson picked us up at the airport and took us to the Edgewater Hotel right on the Yukon River. Teena said it happens all the time and that is why they bring hunters in a day early so bags can catch up.
Next morning we catch the shuttle back to the airport and sure enough all our bags are there. Teena introduces us to Steve from Illinois who will be the third hunter this week. We all hang out in Whitehorse, buy some coolers for meat, go the shooting range and have a good meal. Tomorrow we head up the Alaska Highway four hours to base camp.

10/1
Teena picks us up in here van at 7:30 and away we go. A few scenic pictures from the road.

Two hours later we cross the South end of Kulane Lake and see Dall sheep on a Sheep Mountain. Well actually most are attending the base of the mountain licking minerals on a side road.

We continue along the West shore of the lake with Kulane Park on our left. This is a popular hiking and climbing area.

We stop at a pull off on the lake to stretch our legs and let Teena's dog Abby do her duty. The lake level is down about 10 feet because the glaicer that fed it has receded and no longer feeds the valley to the lake.

A short time later we reach base camp. Several cabins, equipment sheds, and the horse pasture.

Three successful hunters are ready to leave camp and we are excited to see their moose racks. Here is Travis, our wrangler, with one rack. Taken on the last day.

And here is the largest of the week, 65" wide, taken the first day of the the hunt.

We prepare our gear to ride out the next morning to our hunting camps. A good dinner of lasagna and we hit the bunks,

Just drove that stretch from Haines Junction to Tok in August. Never saw the sheep at Kluane, although there were signs all over the place.

Awaiting more Bullwinkle pics . . . .

We get up and have a pancake breakfast then the crew starts preparing the horses for the ride to camp. Food, our gear, equipment, is all weighed and loaded into pack boxes. Curt, Dave, Travis, myself and my guide Kish are all headed to the same camp, seven hours away. Kish was the wrangler on my sheep hunt at age 16, and I am sure looking forwarded to spending time in the mountains with him again. Steve will have Rod as his guide and hunt from a camp 3 hours in.
Curt is ready to ride.

Off we go with Dave in the lead. Eleven horses total.

We each lead a pack horse for about an hour then turn them loose to just follow along. We ride through river beds, across beaver ponds, through woods and thickets, and walk and lead the horses up the steepest slopes.

Three hours in we pass the cabin Rod and Steve will hunt from. They are an hour behind us. Last week's big bull was taken here. Spotted in the valley while breakfast was cooking.
