This is pretty small time but it really hit me wrong.
A local guy was in the hospital. A 'friend' broke into his house and stole his checkbook, then forged $800 worth of checks on it. He's since made good on it but is charged with a couple felonies.

What's wrong with people, anyway?

There's a lot of contributing factors, but most of it can be attributed to the breakdown of the family unit, and most kids are no longer brought up with strong discipline like there used to be.

Ńot enough Dads around beating the fear of God into their young brats after stopping off at the local bar at the end of a long day servicing their ahole bosses.

There is a thing to be said for child abuse within a disfunctional family unit at turn out good citizen. Also where else are we going to get the Jeffery Dalhmers of the world.

Sorry is just sorry. This incident is one he got caught, no telling what other sorry things he’s done.

Used to be when things like this happened, over and above whatever law enforcement did, friends or family of the in-firmed would kick the crap outta the thief. Nowadays, the thief has more rights after being caught than does the victim.

More to the point it used to be that communities were smaller and tightly knit which allowed those same groups to ostracise any miscreants assuring at least a modicum of compliance to a community standard...now those same never-do-wells can pretty much get up to anything and still exist with-in the larger diverse community and not be recognised or brought to task.
Ultimately it is not some idiot copper that wields the authority and will, it is the community itself.

Basically, a man that perceives himself to be without neighbours or peers is also without constraints.

Regardless of how many coppers and laws there are.

If I did that when I was a kid, the law enforcement would be a lot less severe than my dads punishmnt. That’s the way it outta be.

Lack of consequences at home and in life.

My kids were taught that life is about choices, make bad choices you have a bad life, make good choices you have a good life and then they were taught how to make good choices.

People are no damn good!

This. Real character comes from the inside, not the outside. It's not what you do when people might be looking, it's what you do when you know they're not. There are a lot of people in this world without much inside.
