Today a friend of mine and I went elk hunting. He managed to get a decent but not BIG 6x6 about 8:30 this morning. As we were back at another friend's cabin, hanging up the fore mentioned bull, a gentleman that was also hunting ( deer) in the area came by and said he saw a cow elk up in the creek bottom behind the cabin. Here is the amazing part. I went in there and one shot later had a cow on the ground. I used my dad's old Ruger 7x57, with 20 year old handloads. 150 gr. remington core lokt's and IMR4350 ( dad didn't know this stuff was temperature sensitive back then) even........ With a fixed 4x IOR scope. Good thing she was only 30 yards away, being under gunned with improper handloads , I was probably at my max range so as it was..........

Personally, I wouldn't be afraid to hunt anything but elephants with my old 7x57 Featherweight.

Good thing those handloads were so old. You'll probably find they got really hot a few times over the years and the heat made the powder much more potent. I've heard every time a round gets heated up you increase the velocity by 50fps, I tried an experiment recently by putting a whole box in the campfire while we slept. Someone must have come in and stolen them during the night though cause we heard gun shots and in the morning you could see where the campfire had been kicked all over the place.

The older gentleman(76 years young....) that went with me was carrying a Winchester Model 88 and I think it is a .243. We were doomed , but alias the elk still succumbed to one shot in the base of the neck.........
I have shot two shells out of that gun on game and that is the second elk I killed with it and that box of handloads.................. my luck is surely running low!!!!!!!!!

Oh I failed to mentioned, the bull my buddy killed ,was with his dad's old interarms actioned P.O ackley barreled 7mm mag, with( can you even imagine) Factory 175 gr hornadys from several years ago........

Shoulda gotten closer. 30 yards is pushing it with a 4X scope...probably doesn't even have a parallax adjustment either. Someone with more respect for game animals would never take such a chancy shot with that equipment.

My son killed a small bull last year with his 243

135 yds, one shot. Dropped within 5yds.

If he had a real gun, it wouldn't have made it that far....

I have even heard rumors about some people killing elk with arrows.

Dang....I am all upset now.
I did the same thing years ago with my 7X57 using a 175 grain bullet. My friend Pete borrowed that rifle and killed 2 others with 160 grain bullets.

Do I have to worry about those elk coming back to life now? Knowing the 7X57 can't do it, were the elk faking death all these years?
Should I call a priest, or ring my home with garlic? Will they become a zombie elk, and want to get even with me?

Point well taken, I also failed to find a secure rest, firing at will from my own hind legs in an upright position.

I pulled that stunt last year. It worked out , that time, but it was a risk...............
