the only real difference between a good tracker and a bad tracker, is observation. all the same data is present for both. The rest, is understanding what you're seeing.

Pappy, I can't believe they're still up too. Maybe there's still some honest people out there. I've got 2 ladder stands up on private land. I put this one together on the barn floor, loaded it into the truck, and my son and I went out and set it up. He carried the platform piece and I carried the ladder sections. We did it in one trip into the woods. We only had to carry it about 200 yards. Where the straps come down and hook to the middle of the ladder, there were just cinch straps. I took the ends off and replaced them with ratchet straps. It's tight as hell.
If you want a good ladder stand, there it is on sale at Dick's for $150.00. It doesn't get much better then that for deer hunting. I have a Summit climber sitting in the attic for a few years now. Never again

'On my land' I've taken to building little hunting shacks, some one foot off the ground and others up to 16' off. 4X4, 4X6 and 4X8. Go by a local new housing project and ask if they have a scrap pile I can peruse. It's amazing what many just toss to the trash heap.
This getting old deal sux.

A friend of mine had an arrangement with the manager of the gun dept. at Dick's, at the end of the season he would go in and take down their deerstand display and buy them all for a deeply discounted price. The store did not want to mess with taking them down and storing them, also taking the chance that not all the parts would be there when they went to sell them next season. It was a win/win situation and we had some real nice stands on the property.

I've built them out of wood for 30 bucks but they deteriorate after 3 years Most people can manage 12 " steps ok. I bought 2 2 man ladders from Wal Mart last year for 58 a piece. They are solid and rated for 500 pounds. Several years ago I bought a 1 man stand that was rated for 300 pounds it buckled on me while attempting to put it up. Now if I am setting one up I would use an extension ladder to set them up and secure 2 straps around the tree at the top before going up the ladder. I've killed a bunch of deer off ladder stands. But as I get older the appeal of being in the air to hunt goes down.
