Report from south of I-40

Front stuffer season starts this Saturday . We should get our first freeze of the fall according to the weather guestamater . The last two years we have had so many acorns the deer didn't move much at all. This year is a different story . No acorns to speak of but the grass is pecker high to giraffe . I'm hoping the land owner will start brush hogging soon or its gonna be close shooting and fast . Have some great trail cam pics one old buck with a smallish drop tine . I've been saving him for my wife , She will hunt this weekend for the first time this year . In the evenings we will take the grandson who rules this house . He does pretty good as long as I slip him enough candy to knock him out ! I have my lucky Chicken Buck hat from Mr. Stan so we will see !

Dave, we've got about 3 inches up here, so far.

Trans Canada highway closed from 100km west of Thunder Bay to Dryden !

Still coming down. They say 8-9 inches total. Due to clear Friday & below 0*C for the weekend.

Perfect for rifle opener Saturday !

Snow is even supposed to come down this far tomorrow. Up to 3". I don't think it will stick for the week, but it might where we're going to be hunting.

Okay starting to get excited about opener. Was looking at the 10day forecast. Looking good compared to the jungle inferno over MEA. ND was spot on with the wind.

Well it has been awhile since I have been on and I just got caught up! Seems like there is a deer season coming up, eh? 2 posts of note: Nice buck Nate and Tom that was an epic post on tips for sitting in a blind! Well done.

My fall has been one for the ages. A fall of firsts. I will try and keep it short.....

1. Youth Outdoor Activity Day in late August drew 2,180 kids. the most ever. No issues whatsoever.

2. Archery Elk hunting in SW Montana in mid-Sept. Or I should say December. We survived 2 dumpings of snow and for the week it totaled about 20 inches or more. The grizzlies were extremely active prior to our trip including a mauling less than a mile from where we were hunting most of the week. But we went 2 for 4. I shot a bull and two of my buddies shot a bull. nothing huge, but any elk with bow is a trophy in my book.

3. now the firsts start. Brought one of my sons out for Youth Waterfowl Opener. His first time hunting ever at 9 years old. After the first 10 shots (none of which even scared a duck) he turns to me with the quote of the year, "Dad! This is SOOOO FUN!" Lo and behold, about 5 shots later, a duck falls from the sky. My son looked like a bobblehead on steriods he was so excited. My yellow lab makes her first duck retrieve in the water. He is so proud of his first duck (a green winged teal).

4. Same son shoots his first goose this year field hunting. And it is banded. What are the odds of that?

5. Apparently not as rare as you think. My other son shoots his first goose. No band. But his second goose? Banded. I have never shot a banded goose. I am not bringing a gun with this year so I can concentrate on helping the boys.

6. Youth Pheasant Day in ND results in my daughter shooting her first rooster. Lots of smiles.

7. Oh no, we aren't done with firsts yet. The daughter and I went out antelope hunting. She is 13 and I only control her life for a few more years so I just decided to do it. Never hunted them myself, didn't have a place, just made it happen. She shot a young buck on Day 1! Antelope on public land were extremely hard to come by so she decided to fill her tag right away. I waited and ended up with a 72 2/8 beautiful buck with deep curls.

Deer hunting excitement is filling the air here too. Nice to catch up and I hope everyone has a fun, safe deer season. Remember to be extra careful climbing into those stands!

Berettaman awesome fall you are having. Congrats on the elk with a bow not a easy task.

It's fun to see the kids enjoying the outdoors.

BM,
Sounds like you have the fall dialed in!! Lots of tasty treats in the BM house this year. I have been pretty swamped with work this year and haven been out as much chasing the birds.

We hope to get at least one deer in the freezer in the next few weeks. But if we don't we're going to have fun not doing it. grin

Not sure where in OK you live, but in central OK this has been a bumper year for acorns.

So, I don't know what's up, but took my brother and his two daughters to the range in Mound yesterday at around noon. They are both borrowing rifles and wanted to shoot 'em one more time before rifle season.

There was nobody at the range but us. Not one other person. The weekend before opener.

Considering last weekend we had to wait for a lane, it was kinda odd.

That is weird! But I have been at the range all summer/fall working up loads and such. It was not very often I had company.
