I once needed 10 rounds (all I had with me) to kill a caribou in a 40 MPH wind at 10 degrees F., at 100 yards., directly upwind, my eyes watering badly. I hit her 5 times , 3 times fatally. Tough critter, bad shooting . She REALLY didn't want to come out of that hollow! Pretty embarassing...

My m70 fw holds 5 rounds in the mag. So I hunt with 5 rounds. Sometimes I carry an extra round in my pocket.

10...
i load 10 rounds for the hunt...
If I shoot any, I reload those rounds, if I am still going to hunt...
end of season, I disassemble them...
That is the end of a life time of having left over from each season...
15 one year, 11 the next, 17 the next, 15 the next... X 20 years...
dates on ammo, date back from 1993 or so...
so now, 10 and refresh if needed, disassemble at the season end.. So, Seafire, you disassemble them? Why? Just to have fresh powder? Would you install fresh primers too? My cartridges last a long time, though granted, I'm not in a rainy state like Oregon. Just asking. If I can pencil in a hunt this year, I'm likely to bring my 300 WSM, which is new to me. It is a honey, but not exactly light weight. I just received some fresh Federal Premium with 180 gr. Nosler Partitions for it. No reloads on hand in that caliber. How's everyone doing? Norm

I always carry at least 10 because an unloaded rifle is a club. I would never think of carrying 2 or 3 like some of you and the reason has to do with what happened to my Uncle years ago. He was fishing and a man across the river opened fire on him sending him running for his life. He never figured out who the guy was and the Police didn't catch him. But I don't trust people very much so I always have adequate ammo. I came out of the woods late a few years ago because I got turned around. The Game Warden was waiting for me when I walked out of the woods and he was alarmed because my gun was still loaded and he asked me about it. I said "it's for my safety". He asked if I was afraid of Bears? I said "No, people". He didn't argue with that.

I load the magazine before leaving the Jeep/home and carry another 10 rounds in an ammo wallet on my belt so 13-16 rounds depending on which rifle I'm using.

I usually carry the rifle filled to capacity. That's 1. (besides me and Idaho_Shooter above, any other fans of the No1 out there?)
one more round in my front pocket.
4 or 5 more in the belt pouch (depending on caliber)
On the less common occasions that I carry a bolt action, I fill the magazine, don't carry 1 loose in a pocket but still have the belt pouch.
This year.... zero would have been sufficient.

3 in the rifle (bolt closed on empty chamber while hiking) and 5 in the pack. 10 in an ammo wallet left in the truck or in camp. Sometimes, depending on how far I am from camp or the truck, just 3 in the rifle and 2 in a pocket.

On day hunts I’ve always carried a full magazine in the gun, 10 rds in an ammo wallet in my pack and 3 spares in my binocular chest pack for quick acces just in case shtf. If packing in I also carry an additional 20rd mtm box full in my big pack just in case the gun gets jarred off zero. Have never needed to dip into the mtm yet but karma is still a bitch.

best answer yet! I always bring 7 (of each ). However many the gun will hold and the rest in my front pocket. Don't know why, just superstition, I guess.
