I shot my 300 WSM three times without ear protection while hunting. Seems odd to me the muzzle blast never registered with me, never heard it. I know that can’t be good. Why don’t we hear it? Why doesn’t it ring my ears like it would at the shooting range? I know better than to think I am actually unharmed.

Reloder28: I've noticed exactly the same thing but never really gave it much thought. Maybe a smart person has the answer. It may not be an accurate analogy, but in police work, a handgun fired in a life-threatening situation does not seem nearly as loud as it would on the range.

Shoot form prone. Shoot from prone while on rock. Shoot a braked rifle. I've shot critters and never noticed. Other times I have really noticed...............
Longer bbls seem to be easier on the ears. I'll never have a braked hunting rifle again.

But isn't the hearing damage still being done even with auditory exclusion? Is exclusion a "brain trick" rather than actually keeping sound damage to a minimum?

Auditory exclusion happens because your brain is saying that something more important is happening than your hearing. I.e.- it is focusing. It is absolutely just as damaging as ever. Whether you hear the gunshot or not, your ears have physically dealt with the impulse. A single gun shot without earpro causes permanent hearing damage- braked, unbraked, doesn't matter.

What? Can't hear you.
Too much 1970s MC range time and hunting without hearing protection since.
