There's absolutely no pressure signs and the load is actually less than what I'm using with my Custom Creedmoor. I'm not running much above the book. I'm not 100% certain that the Chrono was accurate but it was consistent to 30fps from high to low that day.

Since I'm planning on a Creedmoor, I've looked around for RL16/Creedmoor data and can't find that Alliant has any. How do you know what a "max" load of RL16 is in the Creedmoor?

Found it... Sierra gives RL16 data for a 140 from the Creedmoor. 43.5 grs for 2,800 fps from a 24" barrel, so 2,750 certainly makes sense from a 22" barrel.

Just saw your post.
That Sierra data was one source and jives well with what Alliant sent me when I requested their 6.5CM data a year ago. I don't know why they still haven't published it.

Hopefully you can read that. It's such a pain to post up pics or send files on this site, I had to take a screen shot of the PDF and upload it.

I use 42.5gr with my 140s and 43.5gr with 127gr LRX for 2,760 fps and 2,910 fps respectively, rifle is a Montana. I went above 2,800 fps with the 140s, but accuracy was best where I settled.

Gentlemen,
I APOLOGIZE for failing to check back on this thread... The barrel length was largely dictated by Jim Borden. He did the barreling and I did not want to come out completely against his advice. I spoke with him yesterday and he cut, crowned, and turned the 5/8-24 thread tenon at 21.5". Should have insisted on 20"... Scheduled to be here tomorrow. That said it looks like the stock is dicked, for the moment, so I'll have plenty of time to find some RL16... He strongly suggested custom Whidden Dies as well. Dunno on that either... A "unknown reamer" from AI and Creedmoor Sports. Ran $350ish at the time so I was told. I follow THAT not...

.296" neck, .297" at the neck should interface, with .199 FB, 1°30... Would have preferred a .295" neck and .188" Freebore. That said I have 2.995" of magazine to try and find the lands...

Brad, why are you building a Creedmoor? You know cartridges are really more alike than they are different don't you? It bothers me that YOU, of all people, have been taken in by all of this Tomfoolery... grin

Regards, Matt.

I'm just at the age where I don't like recoil (56), and also can see a "sometime" in the future where I might not want to handload (gasp)... the Creedmoor is one of those that would be ideal for answering both those accurately, while being capable antelope to elk. Plus I had over 1,000 really good 6.5mm bullets given me recently. So I bought dies and 250 pieces of Creedmoor brass... might as well build one!

Neither of my kids (son 24, daughter 27) handload. Were I buying them each a rifle tomorrow it would be chambered for the Creedmoor. They could hunt everything here in MT just fine with great factory ammo and little recoil. Might as well build a couple to leave to them... not that I plan on exiting in the next 40 years -grin.
