As a left hand shooter good bolt actions are hard to find. I just found two LH Ruger Compact rifles. One in 300 and one in 338. Both are the compact magnums. I know nothing about these calibers. What I do like is the platform....short, light, and good open sights. Does anyone have any experience with these rifles? I will use the gun for both hunting and as a back-up rifle guiding. Thanks in advance

PS is brass available ??

The ballistics should speak for themselves. I'd not hesitate as long as I could lay in enough ammo and/or brass for my expected consumption. Rifles with good irons, for those who need them are hard to find, and costly to have installed later. And I'm a pretty confirmed Hawkeye fan. Hornady appears to be a pretty faithful supporter of their creations, unlike some of the other guys.

The last time I looked, CDNN still had the LH Ruger compact in 300 RCM on sale for $500 in blued CM and walnut.

I've got a Stainless 338 RCM that I bought new based on the price. I caught a 6x42 Meopta on sale for it. Now for the ammo and dies. I'm probably looking at being all in for around $1,200.00 with a case of ammo and dies. I think it's going to be a pretty nice backup/loaner rifle for the cost. For a poor guy that has to piece meal stuff together on sale, I'm think I'm going to be pretty proud of it.

To learn about the 338 RCM do a site search here and you will pull up a bunch of Dennis's old posts. He's the reason I joined the fire and pulled the trigger on the 338. He went by muledeer.

I don't think the 300RCM gains you enough over a 30-06 to outweigh the increased increased cost for components and dies.
300RCM give you 4-5 extra grains of powder capacity but usually in 20" barrel so its often a wash speed wise especially in factory ammo.
338RCM could make a better case for in a short barrel guide type gun.

I'm a lefty as well and the CDNN 300 and 338RCMs were tempting but I passed. 338RCM looks to be out of stock. (Last year they had 375Ruger guide guns and alaskans for $599, that would be a better deal for your purposes.
CDNN did just get in some new old stock M77 Hawkeyes in 30-06 for $499. I ordered one of those. You lose the sights and have a 22" barrel but for the extra 2.75in of length I think its a much better package than the 300RCM.

Thanks for the info. Im in Canada and Im assuming CDNN is in the USA? That would mean importing and cost. I had the Ruger Hawkeye LH in 375 ....great rifle I just couldn't handle the recoil. The Compacts I found are close to $1000 CAD

The .338 RCM duplicates the very useful .338-06 in a commercial round. Hornady makes brass for the RCM, of course.

300 RCM with factory ammo is 3100 ft per second with a 180 grain bullet, tough to get that out of a 30-06.....

As for brass availability, the new 6.5 PRC uses the same basic case. That is encouraging.
