Any fellow lefties have experience shooting the old slab side AR ( Colt SP-1 style) rifle? is it a necessity if your shooting off the left shoulder? Looking to build a retro black rifle but don't want to waste my time if its a pain to shoot. I've seen some aftermarket case deflectors that mount to the carry handle but they look like crap. I thought there was a lower profile one that screwed to the receiver just above and to the rear of the ejection port but cant seem to find one. Anyone have any input??
Thanks

I was issued an M16 in 1972 without the deflector bump, it was still basically the first model but with the bird cage flash hider instead of the three fingered vine catcher. They told us to button our shirts all the way up to keep brass from going down them but I never bothered and never had an issue with that.

My first AR was a Colt SP1 and it would send the ejected rounds down my shirt collar (which would leave burn marks shaped like 5.56 case - cooler than a tattoo at the time).
There was an aftermarket deflector whose detent ball would mat with the hole in the carry handle. It deflected ejected rounds well but was ugly

I started my USMC career with the M16A1. Took some hot brass down my shirt. I welcomed the M16A2.

In my Army basic training days, we weren't supplied with the deflectors consistently. Without the plastic deflector, the casings did go down my shirt. It wasn't fun and I learned to button my shirt up whenever I didn't have the deflector. I recommend avoiding any AR without the deflector bump.
